April 15, 2020: Draft Goes On- Part 2

OK, we took a look at the offense; now let’s flip sides of the ball. The defensive needs should certainly be less than the offensive, right?

Although I just talked about the trenches, and that always being a great area for depth, I wouldn’t rate DL towards the top of the list this year. Goldman is rock solid, Hicks will be returning and hopefully will stay healthy, and I know he’s more of a LB, but Quinn was signed; not a bad start. Nichols and Robertson-Harris both showed signs; I think they’re still with us right? We took a flier on Mingo; we resigned Urban. I like our depth up front on defense.

The next level up is one of our strengths; it always seems to be an area of strength for us. Mack, Roquan, Trevathan will be counted on heavily again this year. Overall, the front seven on defense is the strongest part of our team; this hasn’t changed in the past couple years. Although the defense wasn’t as great as the year before, that side of the ball definitely held their own.

The secondary is not as strong. Kyle and Eddie are potential all pros. Outside of those two guys, there are a lot of question marks. Deon Bush at the other safety position? Area of need? With Prince not coming back, the other CBs will be made up of Toliver, Skrine, Shelley, and Roberson. Is that going to be strong enough to fill up our nickel and dime packages? Will one or more of these guys take the next step in their development?

OK, I think we’ve figured out what the focus should be across the board. Let’s rank the positions of need: S, CB, WR, TE, OL, DL, LB, RB, QB. You OK with that?

This position ranking is only one aspect of our strategy. While this is a good guide, if there is a player that is really above and beyond anybody else on the draft board when our picks come, then the best player available kicks in. As you get into the later rounds, this should be even more present. Personally, I would like to snag 2 impact players for THIS year; that isn’t too much to ask from our two 2nd round picks is it? Even if we decide to trade back to get more picks, I’d still like to get some impact players. The timing of impact may switch some of those rankings at the top, and rightfully so.

The draft will not be the only place where the Bears can improve their roster. There still will be some more signings, although most likely not major, before or after the cut down days. Taking advantage of another team’s situation, too much depth at one position for example, can help add to our depth, and best case scenario, score somebody who could step in and really contribute.

This Bears roster is far from perfect, but I feel it’s good enough right now, to be in the mix for a playoff spot (of course I would say that); the defense front 7 alone should help us get a few W’s. But really… the core of guys who were supposed to be much better last year, especially the OL… if they can take a step forward, that would be huge. If the defense can play in between the levels from the last 2 years, that would be great. If the QB, whoever it ends up being, can win us some games, we’re in the playoffs. A lot of what if’s, but nothing too far fetched I don’t think. Looking forward to the draft… although it won’t be the same as years past, it will provide some level of normalcy right now, which I think all of us can agree, will be a very good thing. Bear Down!
