April 16, 2020: Good Timing

posted in: Cubs | 0

I guess I remember hearing they would be doing this, but I was happily surprised when I got in my car to drive home from work the other day when I heard Pat & Ron on the radio. Yes, they were broadcasting a Cubs game; obviously, it was not a current game. In fact, it was not JUST a game… it was Game 5 of the 2016 World Series. I remember it well.

Yes, the Cubs were down 3-1 in the series, losing Games 3 & 4 at Wrigley. This was their last chance to win one in front of the home crowd; this was their last chance to win a game period. It was backs against the wall time; a 103 win season & 108 years weighed in the balance. It was a stressful time… very stressful.

I picked up the game in the top of the 4th inning; talk about good timing. Lester would get through the inning, with a Rizzo-Ross collision and catch for the 3rd out; however, the Cubs still trailed 1-0 heading to the bottom of the 4th. That’s when the series would be turned. Was it that collision between two key members of the team that brought out some smiles with their relief…. or was it what happened when the Cubs would send up their first batter in the bottom of the inning? I seem to remember reading lots of stuff about Kris Bryant not being clutch. Well, I’d argue that he hit one of the most clutch home runs in Cubs history when he stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 4th inning. When that ball sailed out… whew! I mean, what a relief to see that ball make it over the basket. The Cubs were on the board, and the game was tied 1-1. The Cubs weren’t done. Rizzo almost went back to back, and ended up barely making it to 2nd base with a double. Zobrist singled, then Russell’s infield single brought in Rizzo for the 2nd run. After a Heyward strike out, and Baez bunt single, Ross would come up with the bases loaded. He would hit a sacrifice fly, and the Cubs would plate their 3rd run of the inning; this would be their final run of the game.

Lester would hold them to 2 runs total; Edwards would get one out after allowing a single in the 7th. Then it was Chapman time. He was called upon to get an 8 out save; 8 out save!!! We would get the job done. If the bottom of the 9th in Game 7 was his grittiest performance of the series, this would rank 2nd. That guy earned every single penny and more of his contract with the Cubs that year. You could probably say this about a few different guys on this team, but I don’t think we win it all without Chapman. Much love Aroldis.

It was great to hear Pat & Ron again. Sure, I would love to hear a 2020 Cubs game; heck, we were supposed to be in Baltimore and Washington DC this week watching the Cubs play the Orioles and Nationals back to back… damn COVID-19. Listening to them call the World Series, something I did NOT hear the first time around, was a treat. Listening to the Cubs win their first World Series game in Wrigley Field since Game 6 of the 1945 series was nice. Remembering what happened in the following 2 games is even nicer. Ready to do it again; I miss the Cubs…
