April 17, 2020: One Option

Slim pickings on TV nowadays without sports, without live sports. There have been the Bulls and Blackhawks playoff games which have been fun. I’ve seen Sox games out there, but definitely ain’t tuning into them. I’m missing the Cubs stuff because I don’t have Marquee yet. No Bears stuff yet. There’s always YouTube… One option that has also been around, but has moved up the board for me as of late is Poker.

I love cards; I always have. Since the early days of War with my grandmother, to the many, many games of Rummy with my family, I’ve played cards pretty much my whole life. This continued with my grammar school buddies, playing in one of my friend’s basements; showing up with our change. We progressed from there as we all started to get older and make money. Texas Hold ‘Em wasn’t even part of the rotation of games we played. It wasn’t until after Rounders that the game blew up for us.

We had plenty of other options. There were the simple games, like 5 card draw & stud, along with 7 card stud; that wasn’t enough for us. We would play Black Mariah, Queen of Hearts Queen of Spades, Option, Auction, Baseball, Chase the Ace, Buy the Deuce, Burn, King Little, 7-27, Hollywood, Super Hollywood, and of course Cincinnati. We would bankroll Blackjack and Let it Ride. Other fun games were Indian, Screw Your Neighbor, Up & Down the River, and Between the Sheets. We even created new games like Basketball and Ski’s Game. Yes, then came Hold ‘Em and Omaha. I know I’m missing some games… .oh yeah, how about 7 Card Pass 3 Twice… haha. We’d do it all… all while listening to Chicago & Santana, drinking Captain and Cokes, and eating some late night grub. We did this at least once a week; most of the time it was 2-3 times per week.

Those days eventually faded, but a new chapter of cards would begin. We would play at the apartment, which was pretty much an open door policy; there would be a game going on multiple times per week. We would play at work, taking kid’s paychecks. We’d play at bars, dumping money to the owner as he got us drunk with shots. We’d end up back at the apartment, breaking morning many times. Oh yeah, and then there were the casino days…

Plenty of trips across the border to Indiana to Empress at the time. Again, it wasn’t about hold ’em back then; we played everything. And then there were the Vegas trips… we need more time to tell all those stories; not sure I want to tell all those stories… not sure I can even remember them all. I do remember the best hand I ever got. It was a wheel, the straight flush variety, in spades at the Monte Carlo. Unfortunately, it was a limit table; fortunately, the guy I was going heads up with kept betting. I walked away with a nice chunk, plus a bonus for high hand. I also split a tournament win at Flamingo one year; it wasn’t much… I think it was like $900.

As I sit here and watch these guys play, I think about all those years… all the hours I’ve spent playing cards in my lifetime. And now, I’m teaching my son. He’s not that into it yet, besides playing Go Fish. Recently, my wife bought a casino combo game with roulette, hold ’em, craps, and crap.. can’t think of the other game.. oh yeah, Blackjack; it was fun to play that. I’d love to play more of course. One day maybe my son will be into it; one day I’ll play cards again… one day I’ll be back in Vegas… until then, it’s more World Poker Tour.
