April 18, 2020: Burton Bust

posted in: Bears | 0

I debated for a quick second about making this a Hate File. With the release of Trey Burton, it’s official; file this signing under the bust category. He was already sitting comfortably with that label, but if he was still on the team, there was always a chance to redeem himself. Now he’s not, so he can’t.

He wasn’t horrible in his first year with the Bears was he? He did set career highs with catches and yards, although that bar wasn’t that high. Coming off a Super Bowl win with the Eagles, where his stock rose, there were high hopes for Trey, especially playing an important position in the Nagy offense. After his first regular season, he wasn’t a total bust, but he was underwhelming. Still, when the playoffs began vs his ex-team, he had the opportunity to play his best at the most important time of the season. He didn’t. Heck, he didn’t even suit up. With a mystery last minute injury that a lot of us questioned, even more so when we lost, looking to blame somebody as if Parkey wasn’t enough, Burton was forever tainted. Sure, was the injury legit… I don’t know, supposedly. Still, just weird all around… playoffs, his ex-team, not finding out about this until the night before, losing the way we lost. He was just another contributing component to a horrible end to the season.

The following year presented a new opportunity for the team and Burton. He played half the season supposedly dealing with the same injury along with new injuries; he wasn’t that effective when he did play. Like Trubisky, were we to give him a mulligan on a crappy injury filled year? I mean, yeah, I guess. With the Jimmy Graham signing, we wouldn’t have to rely exclusively on him rebounding, similar to the Nick Foles signing dealing with Mitch. With 8, 9, 10…. I can’t even keep track of how many tight ends are on this roster currently, Burton became expendable; he wouldn’t get that second chance. I’m not heartbroken.

Definitely would like a redo with this signing; although we do save some dough, he still costs us a good chunk against the cap this year, even with his release. But to rid us of one piece of drama heading into the season in a logjammed position, I guess it’s worth it. Burton really wasn’t here long enough for me to build up hate against him… the move the night before the playoffs was upsetting… his subpar play was frustrating… not enough to hate him though. All this certainly didn’t garner any love from me either.

So adios Troy; the Burton bust is outta here. Will he sign with somebody else? Does he still have some left in the tank? Who cares. Time to focus on our undisputed number one TE, shedding our roster of about 6 others, and NOT drafting one next week. Bear Down!
