April 20, 2020: First Steps

Sunday night came, and Sunday night went, and I didn’t watch one minute of The Last Dance. Yeah, my son had been up really late the night before, and school was starting back up on Monday; it was time for bed. I didn’t want to watch without him. I told him as I was putting him to bed, that if he got up really early, we could watch it in the morning. I ended up having to go to work that evening; got back about 1230am. Didn’t go immediately to sleep; watched a little of There’s Something about Mary, and then saw Cubs Game 7 on MLB network. It wasn’t until 2am that I laid down. About four and a half hours later, my son was standing next to our bed; “Dad, let’s go watch it”. I told you I had been prepping him for this since birth… No matter how tired I was, I wasn’t saying no, as he stood their in his Bulls PJs; heck, I wanted to watch it too. Yeah, we would take our first steps of The Last Dance early Monday morning.

I had seen clips on Twitter; I had received text messages the night before. Although there certainly would be unseen footage, I knew the story… or at least most of it; I had lived it. Still, the excitement that I felt as I turned on the first episode was high. I wouldn’t be let down. Where to start…

The first episode set the stage; it focused in on the main character in the story. Although there were many characters, many story lines with this team, with this dynasty, there is only one MJ. I’m sure this will remain a common theme throughout. It was really cool seeing the old footage of him at North Carolina, and at the 1984 Olympics. Hearing the Bulls select him with the 3rd pick never gets old. I like how Rod Thorn said he was glad the draft was before the Olympics, because MJ really shined there. Maybe the most talked about part of the first episode was the “traveling cocaine circus”. Really cool story about how MJ walked into a hotel room that one night during his rookie season to see all the “partying” going on, and how he immediately knew he wanted no part of it. Besides his skill, his business like approach, this smart decision would be the start of the culture change in Chicago. He had no time for the BS. He was there to play ball, and wanted to be the best at his craft, with no interference. I like how he picked the best player on that team and was determined to show on the court whose team this would become. It wouldn’t take long.

It was funny seeing the Stadium empty when MJ first came on the scene, and then as they flashed back to the start of the last season. As the Bulls prepared to celebrate their 5th championship, and that music started playing… chills man. The first episode was awesome; although it was getting later in the morning, we weren’t stopping here. 2nd episode was up next.
