April 21, 2024: Track Star

Sunday fun day. The first ever track meet for my son. He didn’t participate in Track & Field last year at school, but after another solid year of Cross Country in the books back in the Fall, he was asked again to join the team for this other sport. Why not? He does everything else. The thing about it… he’s pretty good at everything. From swimming to basketball to baseball to cross country, and now… track. Will he be a track star?

He was part of 4 different events. The first up was the 4×400 relay. Being a rookie to track myself, I had to get used to the details of the events. I’ve watched the Olympics pretty much all my life, so I have a decent understanding. Still, how much is 400M? Well, turns out it’s 1 time around this track; my son would be the anchor. First kid started out pretty good, kind of fading towards the end. The 2nd kid took over and came out like gangbusters, flying towards the front, but he too, faded towards the end. Our 3rd kid tried the opposite approach; he started slow then turned it on towards the end… maybe he waited too long to turn it on. We were positioned towards the top/middle of the pack when my son took over. He started slow too, but then started turning it on. He turned it on enough to get the team to finish in 2nd place. Not a bad start to the track career…

His next event was an individual; it was the 800M. OK, now I’m getting it… this time, it’s 2 times around the track, but no turning it over to a partner. There was that kid again… the one that wins every cross country race. He jumped out, put it in cruise control, and took 1st easily. The 2nd place kid was my son’s teammate, the same one who finished in 2nd in the cross country events. He finished 2nd, easily. Next up was the pack… which my son was a part of. As they started the 2nd lap, he fell behind to the back of that pack; we were waiting for him to turn it on. I think he too waited a bit too long to punch it, but he did, and he flew back into the middle of the pack, ending up finishing in 6th place.

His final track event was the 4×100 relay; again, he was the anchor. This one was cool, because all the kids were positioned at different points around the track, and everybody was gunning it. His team finished 2nd in their heat, and 4th overall. Pretty cool.

My favorite event was his Field event: the Javelin. Now, these kids throw some kind of plastic/foam javelin, and with the wind gusting on this day, it didn’t go so well. With one of his cousins in the stands, he told me he could have thrown in farther… haha. Well, not sure about that, but yeah, he didn’t finish anywhere near the top of the javelin board. We were messing with him… finally, something you’re not good at… haha. Yet, knowing my son, he’ll be back next week, throwing the javelin all the way down the field… just watch… haha.
