April 25, 2020: Talking Myself Into It

Coming into the draft, I had my list for the Bears. At the top of the list was S, CB, WR, and TE. All of these were areas of need in my “expert” opinion. The reason S rose to the top was not only because of the lack of an established guy to line up next to Eddie, but because of the lack of depth. Looking at the next 3 positions of need, each of them lacked an established starter, unless you feel like Jimmy Graham is the guy. However, each of those next 3 positions had a lot of depth. There are a number of CBs, WRs, and TEs on the Bears roster. Will one of them step up? Maybe. At least there were multiple guys that could potentially step up; in the case of tight ends, if 7 of them don’t, maybe 1 of them will.

As the draft rolled into the 2nd round, where the Bears had their first two picks of the draft, there were 3 safeties in play. The kid from Alabama, which would have been nice to line up next to another ex-Crimson Tide player in Eddie Jackson. There was the kid from LSU; great size for his position. There was the kid that I liked the best out of the three, in Winfield Jr; I remember his dad, and if he was anything like that, he’d be an absolute great pick. Xavier from Alabama went off the board to the Giants. Come on… come on… yes! The other two were both available when it came to the Bears pick. The Bears select the TE from Notre Dame Cole Kmet; initially, I wasn’t thrilled. Then I started thinking about it…

I said it myself that Jimmy Graham was a bad signing; since then our other guy Trey Burton was cut. That left about 8 other guys at the position, including busted pick Adam Shaheen; obviously, none of them were thought of much. So believing this information, leaves a glaring hole at one of the biggest weaknesses for the Bears last year. Enter Cole Kmet. One of my buddies made me feel better. Big Irish fan texted me that this kid was a stud; I didn’t know much about him. Why sign Graham then I thought? Well, what guarantee was there that this kid would be there? Was he #1 on the Bears wish list all along? If so, bravo; they got their guy. Their guy hasn’t always been THE guy, but…

With their 2nd pick of the 2nd round, the Bears selected a CB, Jaylon Johnson. It wasn’t a safety, which by the way, the next 2 picks after the Bears is when those other 2 guys got selected, but it was another position of need. From a quick glance on Twitter, looks like some folks feel this was very good value, and that this kid could have been a potential first rounder. OK, again, don’t know much about him, but I don’t need to… not yet at least.

At the end of the day, my biggest thing with these two picks was finding guys who can contribute THIS year. In that aspect, then I think it’s mission accomplished. It may not have been who I wanted, or who you wanted, but at the end of the day, if these guys can play this year and make meaningful contributions, I don’t think we can complain… but we will. Anyways, I’m talking myself into it… I think I’m OK. Only time will tell of course, and there are many more picks to go, but if I’m giving an initial grade, I’m giving a B+. Bear Down!
