The 2020 NFL draft is over; let’s review.
Going into it, here was how I ranked our positions of need: S, CB, WR, TE, OL, DL, LB, RB, QB. To start from the bottom, the Bears did not select a QB or a RB; maybe you were of the opinion that they should have. I’m glad they didn’t. The next 2 positions of least need were in our front 7, a really area of strength for this team. Still, you know what they say… you can never have enough pass rushers. So the Bears did grab one of those guys with the first pick of the 3rd day in Trevis Gipson. At that point, I was still waiting to add to another area where depth is critical, the offensive line. We had to wait until their last 2 picks in the 7th round with Arlington Hambright & Lachavious Simmons. Why wait so long to select guys for the offensive line? That was one of the biggest disappointments last year, although heading into last year, I thought it would be an area of strength. Maybe the new coach will make a difference? Will the group of guys we have flip it around this year?
OK back to the top 4 areas of need; the Bears addressed them. OK, they did NOT select the biggest area of need in my opinion at the S position. This can only lead me to believe one of two things: the Bears believe Deon Bush can get the job done, or they plan on using one of the many CBs on the roster in that position. The Bears did draft a CB in Kindle Vildor on the 3rd day; of course they had already grabbed who many think could be a real steal with Jaylon Johnson. The competition in the secondary should be fun; may the best guys win.

As far as the Bears draft, I am satisfied. If I had to give it a grade, without any first round picks, I’d have to give them a B. I think most of the areas of need were addressed. I think we have two guys who can contribute immediately. Honestly, it’ll come down to the QB… as it usually does with us, to determine how successful our year will be. To make it back to the playoffs, we don’t need an all-pro in that position… just somebody who can play average to slightly above; I’d like to think either one of the guys COULD do that. That may be the most important of all competitions to monitor in the months ahead. Can’t wait… just hope football isn’t impacted as much as the other sports have been. Bear Down!
