April 27, 2021: Drafting a QB

posted in: Bears | 0

Yep, it’s that time of year again; the NFL draft is on Thursday. And just like most years, the Bears will NOT be drafting a QB, right? Well, let’s hope this changes this year, not just in drafting one, but drafting the right one. Easier said than done, no?

Well, the drafting of a QB is NOT hard. It was something Ryan Pace said he would do on a regular basis; he only drafted one his entire time here. You have to go back 4 years to when the Bears last drafted a QB; yep, on this day actually. I remember I was so pissed when the Bears traded up one spot to draft Trubisky; I think that was the first time I dropped an F bomb in front of my son. First off, I wanted Watson. Second off, why would we have to trade up to draft this guy? Finally, I had hoped I was wrong… Look, mistakes happen; we know this was a mistake at this point; we knew that way before now, no? My problem is, and I have said this repeatedly, is that we didn’t take another shot… and no, signing some retread QBs don’t count. I’m talking about DRAFTING A QB. We need to keep drafting one until we get it right, period! The drafting of Trubisky… making the wrong choice, trading up to do so, not doing their due diligence, and not drafting another QB the entire time, is why I had no problem with Pace getting the boot. Well, he’s still here… will we finally draft another QB?

Before the Trubisky debacle, the Bears had drafted 15 different QBs since they took Jim McMahon in the first round in 1982. I thought it’d be worse… I mean, the sheer number of QBs that the Bears had drafted… it comes out to like 1 every 2+ years; that’s not so bad. It’s just another reason why I can’t understand why we haven’t drafted another QB since Trubisky and why we definitely SHOULD take one this year. Anyways, but looking at those picks… if you thought the list of Bears starting QBs over the years was bad; some of them we did draft, but there were a whole lot of other guys we drafted that you may not have heard of. OK, let me go quick: QB name, round, and year. Mark Casale, 9th, 1984/Jim Harbaugh, 1st, 1987/Brent Snyder, 7th, 1989/ Peter Tom Willis, 3rd, 1990/ Paul Justin, 7th, 1991/ Will Furrer, 4th, 1992/ Moses Moreno, 7th, 1998/ Cade McNown, 1st, 1999/ Rex Grossman, 1st, 2003/ Craig Krenzel, 5th, 2004/ Kyle Orton, 4th, 2005/ Dan LeFevour, 6th, 2010/ Nathan Enderle, 5th, 2011/ David Fales, 6th, 2014… whew! Who’s your favorite? Shit…

OK, it ain’t that bad, right? There are some familiar names; guys who did halfway decent for us. But here’s my point: take the Jim Harbaugh pick in 1987 in the first round; great pick… didn’t turn out great, but go get a damn QB since McMahon was hurt and Tomczak and Flutie didn’t do the job. Good. In 1989 & 1992 we took semi-serious shots; those were busts. In 1999, we loaded up again, and failed again. In 2003, we loaded up again, and failed again; yes, I liked Sexy Rexy for a minute there… he was our QB in our last Super Bowl appearance; talk about getting there in spite of your QB. Even Kyle in 2005 performed averagely… that seems to be the trend here though… average… at best. Why can’t the Bears get it right? When do the Bears hit the QB lotto? Well, you know what they say; you gotta play to win. If the Bears don’t keep drafting a QB, they’re not going to win.

In summary, the Bears better F-ing draft a QB this year; honestly, I don’t care who it is. I’m not even going to pick a guy I like the best; just draft somebody. If not with their first round pick, then their second round; if not with the second round pick, then the third round. If we think we can pull a Brady out of our ass after all these years of failures, then draft one in the last round. I don’t care. Just draft a damn QB! That will shut me up for now… until I write about how we drafted the wrong guy again… Bear Down dammit!
