April 29, 2021: Take a Chance

This really should be the motto for the NFL draft: Take a Chance. Everybody thinks they know who is going to be good and who is going to suck; at the end of the day, there are A LOT more misses than hits in the draft, across the board, by every single team. Those teams that have more hits, over time, rise to the top; those that have more misses, stay where they’re at. It’s not easy, especially at the one position that is more important than any single position in team sports: the quarterback. This just so happens to be the nemesis of our Bears. At this very moment, and it’s become clearer over time, my thinking is this: keep drafting a QB until you get it right. The Bears still don’t have it right, thus, they should be drafting a QB.

I’ve already thought back to 4 years ago, and the drafting of Mitch; unfortunately, my initial feelings on the matter were proven out over time, and now Trubisky settles into his role for the next decade: a backup QB. OK, that ship has sailed; now what? Well, we still have the backup QB position covered… x2 actually… with Foles and Dalton, while we still wait to find a legitimate starter in this league. For all the shit I talk about Cutler, at least he was a legitimate starting QB; he was NOT a franchise QB by any stretch, but he was a starter… I’ll give him that. So while the search for a franchise QB continues for the 8th decade in a row, the search for a legitimate starter is probably more pressing, and honestly, will we come out of the draft with a legitimate starter? Well, maybe not in 2021, but going forward, hopefully. Yes, this is where you start; draft a QB… am I making myself clear?

I don’t mind taking other guys with the first pick in the draft. Kmet and Montgomery may turn into fine players; we already know Roquan is a stud. Leonard Floyd has turned into a fine player, just not with us, while Kevin White… well, yeah. Kyle Fuller will be playing shut down corner elsewhere this year, while Kyle Long is resurrecting his career in KC. That brings us back to 2012, where Shea McClellin’s name was called and I threw something at the TV. Yes, he did have that one big tackle against Aaron Rodgers, but… we could get anybody to do that, no? The picks before that aren’t pretty: Gabe Carimi, Major Wright, Jarron Gilbert, and Chris Williams… ouch! We did get it right in 2007 with Greg Olsen, but we F’d that up too. OK, I’ll stop. We have to go back to 1999 when we selected Cade McNown with the 12th overall pick to find the last year we took a QB in the first round; OK, I said I was going to stop.

What will happen with the 20th overall pick tonight? Will the Bears trade up? Will they take a QB in the first round? Will they take one in the first 3 rounds? Who will it be? I don’t have a #1 to be honest with you. After Lawrence and Wilson, there’s Fields, Lance, and Jones; I don’t care which one… my preference is to take one… take a chance. If they don’t, and go another route, fine; grab a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round. Don’t let the first 3 rounds go without drafting one. Somehow, some way, we need to get ourselves a legitimate starting QB, and then, maybe then, we can parlay that into a franchise QB… the first of my lifetime. I’ll be watching… Bear Down!
