April 30, 2020: The New GM

The Bulls are really taking advantage of this down time due to COVID 19. They continued on the complete overhaul of the front office by hiring Marc Eversley as the new GM of the Chicago Bulls. Again, I don’t know anything about this guy, just like with Artie, but from what I’m reading, it sounds like another pretty solid move.

The biggest thing that I like from what I read is Artie’s goal to surround himself with folks that complement his skills, and those of the other front office members. He wants the process to be collaborative, which I think is really important. As a manager, a leader of people, the last thing you should want are people that think exactly like you, folks that come from the same background as you, people that are just going to sit there and nod their heads with everything going on. You want people who will speak up; you want people not afraid to express their views. Yes, at the end of the day, you want to end up on the same page, but it’s a process to get there sometimes. You shouldn’t fear for your job because you are expressing your opinion, like everyone working for the White House nowadays. Freely discussing ideas… taking advantage of everything that you have been through as an individual… tapping into that… makes for the most effective team in my humble opinion. In that aspect, another great hire for Artie.

That brings us to the next order of business: the firing of Jim Boylen. I was assuming that Artie was waiting for the new GM to be hired before proceeding down this path, but now I’m reading stuff that says Boylen thinks he’s safe? Hopefully that’s just dumb ass time out calling, no value adding Boylen being oblivious to the inevitable, because if he sticks around, all this good will, all this momentum that has been built, is washed away. I don’t care if and when this season resumes; I don’t care to let Boylen coach out the string. I don’t care to do any further analysis of his performance. If these smart basketball people that Artie has surrounded himself with are really smart, then the decision is clear. Is there anybody in their right mind that thinks Boylen deserves more time, let alone another chance?

Funny that this has been the most exciting time in recent memory for the Bulls. Of course there’s the whole Last Dance going on, which is a very much needed feel good walk down memory lane. But when you fast forward back to today, remembering how bad we were, how dysfunctional the front office and coach are, and the fact that this is all true when we had to host the world for the All Star game… it was damn embarrassing. We needed this in the worst way.

So welcome to the mix Marc. Looking forward to great things from you and everyone else in what will be the newly, brought up to current day speed front office. Now do your first job and can Boylen. Go Bulls.
