April 5, 2021: Easter Miracle

posted in: Bulls | 0

Heading into church on Easter Sunday, I saw another big Bulls fan. We both agreed that it had been a tough stretch, especially tough after being so excited about the Vucevic trade. I told him maybe the Bulls would provide an Easter miracle for us on Sunday vs the Nets at the UC; I guess I should have put some money on that prediction.

Coming into this one, the Bulls had lost 8 of 9, including 4 in a row post trade. First, all four of those games were on the road; Sunday marked the first game for Vooch at the UC. Secondly, the teams we lost too were no slouches. Utah and Phoenix are 1 & 2 in the West, while Golden State and San Antonio are in the same position as the Bulls, fighting for a playoff spot. Thirdly, won’t it take a few games for the new guys to click with the “old guys”? They’re just not going to take the court and look great, right? Hey, I was hoping… actually on offense, the Bulls have looked OK; it’s the defensive side of things that’s been the bigger problem. Giving up 117.5 pts/per game on average in those last 4 road games? That’s not going to get it done. So yeah, although the Bulls are currently 8 games under 500, and 3.5 games out of the final playoff spot, I still think there is a chance. I think this was just bad timing with the schedule; Sunday was no better, facing the #1 team in the East, the Brooklyn Nets.

Sure, KD and Harden were out, but that’s not our problem. We need Ws however we can get them. Holding the Nets to 107 points was good enough to get that much needed win 115-107. It truly did feel like an Easter miracle, and now… the schedule gets a bit easier. How many games we playing this year? 24 games left… the final third of this 72 game slate. It starts on Tuesday night vs the team that sits right ahead of us in the standings, the Indiana Pacers.

If the Bulls somehow got back to 500… which would take a 16-8 record down the stretch, I do think that would be good enough to get in. Feels like a bit of a stretch coming off a fresh 1-8 run before the win over the Nets on Sunday, but call me crazy, I think they can do it. Take a closer look at the remaining schedule. The Magic, the Pistons, the Cavs twice, the Raptors twice… all behind us in the standings right now. We only have 3 more games vs the Western Conference this year: the Timberwolves and Grizzlies twice. The rest of the games are vs teams ahead of us in the East, which helps my case; we are in control of our destiny. The Knicks, the Celtics twice, the Hornets twice, and the Pacers next. Well, that’s only 15 games… Even if we were to win all of those, we still need to play the Nets twice, the Heat twice, the Bucks twice, the Sixers, and the Hawks twice. OK, this isn’t going to be easy…

Still, for the most part, this has been a fun year to watch the Bulls. Let’s have some more fun boys. Let’s play our asses off, on BOTH sides of the ball. Let’s beat the teams we should beat, and split with the rest. Let’s get into the postseason. Let’s do this. Go Bulls!
