August 14, 2021: A Meaningful Preseason Game

posted in: Bears | 0

Never big on the preseason NFL. I know, I know… it’s the return of Bears football; I get it. Still, I can’t get too overly excited for games that don’t mean anything. Well, that brings us to this year, where dare I say, we have a meaningful preseason game? Of course you know what I’m talking about; it was the debut of Justin Fields!

Before that, why was Andy Dalton starting? That’s just for preseason right? I mean, he’s got cool red hair and all, plus the beard, but… anyways. He sucked; big shocker there. Something else that was kind of disturbing early on was the number 23 that was returning kicks; blasphemy I say, blasphemy. That’s just wrong. I just got done watching some Devin Hester highlights. With his first year of eligibility for the Hall of Fame coming up next year, I was getting in the mood… he deserves to be in, no? He better get in. He was a game changer. That opening kick return in the Super Bowl… one of the best moments ever. Unfortunately, it was all down hill after that. But to see another guy wearing that number on the Bears AND returning kicks? That shit shouldn’t be happening, but hey… I’ve been saying that about the #50 for years now.

When I told my brother I had recorded the game, and was going to watch it later, he said fast forward until the end of the first half; I should have listened to him. The defense looked pretty good, but the reason I recorded this preseason game was to see Justin Fields play. I already had a bunch of text messages, so I knew he did OK, but it didn’t start off so great… couple penalties… one they blamed on Wims… easy target, but it was about to be a delay of game. Anyways, no worries… not judging him on his first couple plays ever in the NFL; butterflies for sure, but that didn’t last long.

I know it’s only a preseason game, but man… some of those throws, his scrambling ability, throwing on the run, his poise, his speed… I know it was against 2nd stringers, right? Still… you can see many reasons to be excited. I’m not going to crown him yet, but… well, I already said he should be starting, if he’s the best QB on the roster, and we can answer that already, can’t we?

Once I saw Foles come in the game, I stopped watching. I had seen what I wanted to see. Fields ran one in and threw one. My favorite play may have been that other scramble. He kicked it in another gear; he’s a big kid too. These type of highlights from a QB… we’re only used to seeing on other teams. Do we really have one now? Whew… OK, calm down…

All this hype around Fields… all this anticipation and excitement… I’ll tell you what… this game certainly didn’t do anything to temper that. If anything, it just added fuel to this fire… this belief that he could be the 2nd Bears franchise QB in history; it’s only been about 80 years… I guess we’re due. But it’s only one game… a preseason game at that… But… yeah, I was already excited for Bears season, but now… time to start making those Super Bowl plans. Just kidding… kind of… Bear Down!
