August 15, 2020: All but Done

After Saturday night’s loss to the Knights, the Blackhawks are all but done. Why am I not devastated at this point?

First off, the past couple weeks have been cake. We would not have seen these qualifying round and 1st round playoff games if there hadn’t been the whole suspension of the season due to COVID. The Blackhawks were not a playoff team. The fact that we got a second chance, the fact that we even had the opportunity to make some noise, is appreciated. And oh yeah, the Blackhawks won their qualifying round series. Still rooting for the Blackhawks to win at least one game so we can see at least one more game with them on the ice. One thing is true: the absence of live sports has certainly made the heart grow fonder. Just to see the Blackhawks skating has been sweet.

Secondly, the Vegas Golden Knights are the better team, pure and simple. If you didn’t know that going into the series, and you couldn’t figure that out after the first game, I don’t know what to tell you. Like I said previously, that doesn’t automatically mean we were going to lose this series. Things happen, and with the guys on this Blackhawks team, that was a possibility. We’ve seen great players do great things over the years. We’ve seen great things in this series, it just hasn’t been enough, not nearly enough. The Hawks would have had to play almost perfect hockey to beat the Knights in this series. The mistakes that the Blackhawks have made, like giving up easy goals, whether that’s on the defense or Crow, like turning the puck over, like not taking advantage of our opportunities, and oh yeah, hitting a bunch of posts doesn’t bode well either. It has been too much to overcome.

Finally, the fact that the Hawks are playing these games, the fact that all those young guys are getting playoff experience in a year where this would NOT have happened, is a big, big bonus. I firmly believe that this experience will propel the Blackhawks next year. I’m not calling Cup, I’m just saying that this will be a valuable experience. This should show the young guys how they need to play to be successful in the playoffs. This should piss them off. This should make them escalate their games. This should make them more hungry to get back and prove they got what it takes. I just hope the old guys have another year or two left in them.

It was fun while it lasted, and like I said, I’ll be watching on Sunday as well. I’d love to make the Knights sweat a bit. Winning a game would be nice; winning two would achieve that goal. Although there have been years where the Blackhawks losing in the playoffs has been extremely painful, I do not count this as one of them. I’m good. Go Hawks!
