August 17, 2020: One Last Time

As the series began, it was quite apparent that the Knights were the better team. However, like I said, there were still ways for us to win. The first possibility was that Crawford would have to carry us; he did just that on Sunday to keep the Hawks alive. Why am I getting the feeling this may have been the one last time he will ever do this in a Hawks sweater?

We all know how our relationship with Corey Crawford has been over the years, but at the end of the day, with 2 Cups to his name, he deserves to be mentioned with the greatest Blackhawks goalies ever. Underrated? Maybe. Underappreciated? Sure. Crow has had his moments, just like in this series. Those moments when we yell at the TV, and ask the question why the hell didn’t you make that save. Letting those “easy” ones go in always bugged us, as if we would have saved them ourselves. Yet, there were always those games where Crow did the impossible. What happened on Sunday seemed almost impossible. For that reason, it is improbable to repeat itself. Thus, we’ll need to find another way to beat the better team, to extend the series, to make them sweat.

Calling Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. Other than that 3 assist game for Kane back in Game 2, a Blackhawks loss by the way, these guys haven’t done crap. Toews has one assist the entire series; Kane only has 1 other assist the whole series outside of Game 2. And oh yeah, zero goals between them. This has to change if the Hawks are going to win one more game this series, let alone come back and win the series, which at this point still seems highly unlikely. Yet, you can’t think about that… it’s one game at a time. And to win Game 5, Kane and Toews will need to score. We need our leaders to carry us to another win. Game 4 was the Crow game; we need a Kane and/or Toews game. This is the way the Blackhawks can push the series to a sixth game.

We may have seen the last phenomenal game from Crow as a Blackhawk. Crawford is an unrestricted free agent after this year; he will turn 37 next year. He’s making $6M this year, the final year of his contract. Will the Blackhawks keep him? This is the reason I wanted them to sign Lehner. What is the backup plan if no Crow? Who knows what will happen after the year is over, which may be Tuesday night. I do know that I appreciate Crow. I appreciate all the great things he’s done for this organization over the year, including the last installment on Sunday. If Crow doesn’t return, I will miss him. Whoever will patrol the crease for the Hawks going forward, will have big skates to fill.

Thank you Crow; thanks for the memories. Thanks for giving us at least one more hockey game to watch this year. It’s time for somebody else to pick us up, and get us that 2nd victory. We know you’ll keep us close. Need a great game from 88 & 19 on Tuesday night. I know they still have some left. Go Hawks!
