August 18, 2020: Swarming

Crawford made a bunch of good saves, again. Toews and Kane both scored goals. Yet, it wasn’t enough to beat the Knights in Game 5. There will be no Game 6; the Hawks are going home. Bummer.

Is this the end for Crawford? Becoming an unrestricted free agent, turning 37 next year, after earning $6M this year, will this be the end of Crow? What is the plan? We’ll have plenty of time to discuss that. Bottom line though: he still had what it took in this series. That was evident. He could still hang. He was certainly not the reason the Blackhawks are not advancing.

After being held out of the net for the first four games of the series, both Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane lit the lamp; normally when that happens, the result is a W… in fact if I heard correctly, before this one, the Hawks were 6-0 when they both scored in the postseason. They will both be back, but do they have what it takes going forward? I’d like to think so. Was the lack of production out of our future hall of famers the reason for our downfall?

The best thing about this series loss was the experienced gained by the young guys, which if you add them all up, made the Hawks the youngest team in the league. You cannot simulate playoff hockey. The fact that those kids got their feet wet, got that first taste of the second season in a year when that was not going to happen, is huge. Losing this series is like the down payment for that house we’re building. It’s an investment that will hopefully pay dividends over the next couple years. Were the Hawks just too young overall? Was this the reason the Hawks came up short?

The reason the Hawks lost is simple; the Vegas Golden Knights were the better team… hands down. I wouldn’t be surprised, and actually because of Lehner, wouldn’t mind seeing them take it all. I have no hard feelings, no ill will towards this team for beating us. This was not what I would categorize as a painful playoff loss. Sure, they all are; it sucks that we won’t see the Hawks until who knows when. But realistically, even in this most optimistic fan’s heart, going up against this team was a huge ask from our boys. I think my dad described them best in our group texts with my brother; swarming… They just never stop coming at you. Hawks score; don’t matter. Crow makes a great save; here comes another… try to stop this. Faster, bigger, more physical, more skilled, flat out better. How do the Hawks get back to that level?

Well, we took our first step in the past 2 series; it’s never an easy process… there are no shortcuts. I can only hope that the boys get back to the grind, work on their game, get physically stronger, build more chemistry, and collectively figure out how to take the next step. We have guys that have taken all the steps. We’ll need help from up top to add to this team. Assuming Bowman stays? I’m sure Colliton isn’t going anywhere yet. Like I said above, plenty of time to discuss all of that.

Hey, I just can’t believe I stood up for the whole game this time AND have the energy to bang this out really quick; shocking, considering I was fading at the end of the 2nd period. But I made it… unfortunately, the Hawks did not. Bummed out, but not devastated. Soak up this experience and parlay it into future opportunities. While the core continues to age, and THAT window may be closing, a new one is opening. Looking forward to what’s next. Enjoy the offseason; get ready to come back full force next year. Go Hawks!
