August 19, 2021: We Meet Again

posted in: Bears | 0

Dare I say, there is another meaningful preseason game on the horizon for the Bears this weekend? Yes, of course. Getting to see more of Justin Fields in action will be fun; hoping that once this game is over, Nagy will announce him as the starting QB. The way things have been going, the way the Bears have been framing it, the way Dalton has been claiming it, I doubt it. It’s the right thing to do… starting Fields from jump… but how many times do our teams do the right thing?

The Bears opponent this week will bring a familiar face to Chicago. That’s right, it’s the return of Mitch Trubisky to Soldier Field; we meet again…

I do not hate Mitch Trubisky. If I did, I would have dropped a hate file the minute he left; I didn’t. I’m not a fan of his any longer, but I don’t have any hard feelings. He wasn’t the guy… it’s not his fault that the Bears traded up to draft him, a guy with very little college experience, without even seriously looking at the other QB options in that draft. I’m mad at the Bears for that, for sure. To get an opportunity like that and swing and miss is one thing; to do so because due diligence wasn’t done, that’s another… that’s called pure stupidity, that’s why I wanted Pace gone. But… Pace is still here, and he took another swing in this year’s draft, like he damn well should have; let’s hope this one gets out of the infield.

OK, I guess that’s not fair. Trubisky had his moments here in Chicago. Of course, in Nagy’s first year, the defense carried us; familiar story here in Chicago. But Mitch held his own; I mean, he wasn’t any worse than Rex Grossman who was our QB the last time we made the Super Bowl. I really do think we should have made the Super Bowl back in 2018; F-ing Parkey… I DID drop a Hate File on that guy. 2019 was a down year; Mitch was hurt too. No excuses, just facts. In 2020, we brought in Foles as an insurance policy to Trubisky, in case he didn’t pan out. Well, he didn’t pan out, and Foles sucked, so even though the Bears snuck in the expanded playoffs last year, we really didn’t think they were going anywhere did we? Even those of us with the most faith…

And now, Mitch is gone; it was the right thing to not re-sign him. If we needed proof of that, reassurances that it was the right move, he signed as a backup… any questions? Mitch may be able to carve out a nice little career as a backup; he may even win some games if he gets a chance to start due to an injury or something. I don’t think he’s much more than that. He certainly was not worthy of the 2nd overall pick back in 2017. But… that ship has sailed; a new ship has pulled in… we should all be happy with the promise this brings. I know I am.

Sure, Mitch will get some boos when he takes the field on Saturday; what did you think? He was booed after he was drafted and was shown on the jumbotron at the Bulls game. Who else we going to boo? Ryan Pace isn’t exactly in a position where we can boo him. He doesn’t take the field; he isn’t shown on the big screen at other Chicago sporting events. We can’t attend a press conference and boo him. Sure, we can talk all the shit we want online… it would be nice to get one chance to let him hear it… but we’ll never get that chance. In fact, we’d only get a chance to cheer him… if the Bears won a Super Bowl; funny right? Yet, I’d be OK with that. If the Bears won a Super Bowl, nothing else would matter.

For this weekend though, the season has still not begun. We’ll see our present, our future take the field against our past. Two ships passing in the night as they say. I think we’re on the right ship this time. Bear Down!
