Well, the slump continues. Getting take care of by the Sox is one thing; they were red hot. Actually, they haven’t cooled off, and have joined the Cubs in first place in their division. Getting beat by the Tigers was flat out embarrassing; did you see that roster? The Cubs had no business losing that series. One game maybe, losing the series? That brings us to Cincinnati on Friday night. The Reds haven’t been playing well either; something has got to give.

It’s happening. We knew it couldn’t continue. If you look up and down the Cubs lineup and see their batting averages, it’s easy to figure out how the Cubs are in first place. It’s their starting pitching of course. Well, we knew that level of greatness couldn’t continue; we knew the bats would have to wake up to keep us in first place. Well, we’re still waiting. Sure, the Cubs have treated us with some 9th inning excitement; why they wait until the last inning to decide to do that is beyond me. But that excitement was short lived, in both cases. The Cubs lost again in the series opener against the Reds.

A look at the standings still has the Cubs in first place. 18-12 in the first half of the season isn’t too shabby; 0-1 in the second half now. What will it take to make the playoffs this year? Well, considering 8 teams in each league make the second season, it should take a lot less than normal. With such a great start, it would be pretty bad if the Cubs were to fall all the way out. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

We knew that like every season, this one would have ups and downs. We’ve had our up; we’re in the middle of our down. I’m ready for another up. Three more games against the Reds coming up, including a doubleheader on Saturday. Darvish vs Bauer will give us a match up of two of the best pitchers thus far this year. The second game we’ll ask for Mills to keep us his good season; hopefully the wheels haven’t fallen off for Chatwood. Sunday the Cubs will face Luis Castillo. This will be no easy task.

The Cardinals have been scuffling too, which keeps them 3 games back of the Cubs. The Reds and Brewers sit 4 back; the Reds could really make a move this weekend keeping the Cubbies down. The Pirates remain the worst team in baseball 8 games back in the Central. I can’t see the Cubs faltering so much that they miss the playoffs this year; I don’t even want to think about that. Surely if that happens, this team will get a face lift. OK, I’m coming in off the ledge… let’s get back to playing some winning baseball. Again, looking forward to getting back to that…. like ASAP. Come on Cubbies; let’s go!
