August 28, 2021: AAA Team Power

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 4

I actually forgot it was this weekend, you know, the Crosstown Series. Excuse me if I haven’t been fully in tune with the Cubs schedule, record, place in the standings like I usually am. Yeah, taking a little step back has been helpful, necessary. I can’t step all the way back; I can’t quit the Cubs, never that. But when I got a text on Friday afternoon if I was ready for this weekend, I wasn’t, because until that moment, I hadn’t realized it.

Why would I be ready, excited? What, to see a MLB team take on a AAA team? The Sox are 110% better than the Cubs, by a long shot. It’s not even close. We have a team running away from their division vs a team running away from the top of the standings. It’s a joke, a sick joke. The Cubs have nobody to blame but themselves, and we, the fans, have to pay for this bullshit. These were the years we thought maybe it would come true. Forget the Crosstown Series, what about a Crosstown World Series? Yeah, while the Cubs have been making the playoffs every year, the Sox have been trying to get their shit together. Last year, they actually both made the playoffs… now we’re talking, but each exited first round. And now, as the Sox appear ready to take the next step, the Cubs have exited the building. Well, the timing will be right one day…

As for this weekend’s series, it started off with a big surprise, with the Cubs taking a 6-0 lead in the first inning. It was followed by not such a surprise, when the Sox stormed back to tie the game, take the lead on a dropped pop up, and pull away for an easy victory. Well, the Cubs did make some noise late, but it was not nearly enough. Saturday brought game 2 of the series; I wasn’t watching. But when I finally checked my phone to see the score, I saw the Cubs were up again, this time 7-0… this time it was in the bottom of the 9th. Surely, THIS lead was safe, right?

Right. The Cubs tied the series with some more AAA team power lead by Wisdom and Ortega. Mills threw a hell of a game; of course he did… the week after I cut him from my fantasy team… haha. For the Cubs to take one game in this series, it’s embarrassing for the Sox. I thought they were really good against inferior teams? Well, they’ll have one more chance to pound the Cubs into the ground on Sunday. One more chance to fill their stadium, coming out in droves to see this monumental mismatch. That’s cool… enjoy it while you have it.

But this IS the Cubs Sox; doesn’t the worse team usually win? Well, that certainly didn’t happen back in Wrigley when the Cubs were swept; that was definitely according to the script. If the Cubs were to win the game on Sunday, that would be called flipping the script. Winning a series is always fun; beating the pumped up Sox, being able to give them a little shit… that would be cool. I guess we already have that just by winning one game. But, a series win would be better; what the heck is that anyway? Well, I may actually watch this finale, hoping to find out. Go Cubs!

Not sweeping this team was embarrassing enough. Losing the series would be unbearable. We’ve done well beating up on the bottom feeders. So we should pull out game three. Unfortunately we don’t fair well against the upper teams. We’re not looking like a World Series team.

Haha… Sox looked great against the Cubs 2 out of 3 games, but like you said, it’s how they fare against the best that will matter at the end. I think they got as good a shot as anybody.

Hmmm, back in ’16 who do I remember intimating that the Sox should play their bench for the Crosstown ’cause the Cubs were on their way to the pennant?
