Here is MOS thus far. MOS stands for My Olympic Summary. I know, not as cool as the ROC, or Russian Olympic Committee. They had to do that to separate “Russia” because of the doping that goes on there? Regardless, one of the US swimmers was whining about it when he finished 2nd to the ROC rep in that particular swimming event. Who knows what goes on over there. No doping here though, at least not that kind…

I love the Olympics. I’ve seen people bitching about the time difference, and hearing about stuff that happened before they see it in primetime; quit your whining people. Stay off your damn phone if you don’t want to get an update, or stay up late to watch it live; you have options. I like the time difference thing, and the fact that I’m watching live stuff going on at midnight sitting on my couch; it’s cool. I like that they show you “LIVE” in the upper right hand corner to indicate as much; I prefer watching the live stuff vs the already happened stuff even if I don’t know what happened. Yet, I’ll still watch the already happened stuff because I only get to see this “stuff” every 4 years… although if I really wanted to, I’m sure I could hunt down the World Championships that happen each year in each of these events, but… it’s not the same. That’s like if I’d follow soccer year round instead of getting hyped up for the World Cup.

I like the cool stuff that has happened, like the Phillipines winning their first ever gold medal; the Bears player’s sister that won one of the first ever gold medals in a track and field event for Puerto Rico. I like when the one lady that fell down in a track and field event stormed back to win the event; wow!!! I like the new events, especially the skateboarding; there was some new skateboarding events on Tuesday night which I was tuned into as well. I’m not necessarily all on board for the whole Simone Biles celebration though…

Look, anybody that makes the Olympics is the shit; they are awesome, no doubt about it. When I was in my teens, I can guarantee you I wasn’t doing anything half as cool… shit, even when I got older. Becoming an Olympian is something you can take with you to the grave; it is literally a lifetime accomplishment. This is even more true when it comes to winning a medal, regardless of what type. So when Biles won the bronze, she was only the 3rd best in the entire world… haha. What an accomplishment, for anybody, to medal, whether it’s gold, silver, or bronze. That being said… the expectations for Biles were sky high; we’re talking multiple gold medals… we’re talking GOAT gymnast. What we got was one bronze medal. It’s OK to say that this was a disappointing Olympics for her.

She set the bar so high… and she knew it. The couple interviews I saw with her before the Olympics, she seemed pretty cocky… OK, with some spin, cutely confident? Yet, when the moment came… choke job; this is what we used to call it, no? Believe me, I’m familiar with it; I’m a Cubs fan. I never claimed mental health as the reason why my team lost on the big stage; they choked. Now that’s not to say it’s not mentally tough trying to be the best in your craft, especially when you’re talking about breaking an 108 year “curse”. The team that did it in 2016 will always be remembered for that reason. Similarly, in the Olympics, you work your whole lifetime for THIS moment; it’s a lot… no doubt. The pressure, the stress… it’s enough to take anybody out; kind of like how the pandemic has tested all of us. This mental shit ain’t no joke, but…

Let’s not act like Simone Biles had a successful Olympics; she had a hugely disappointing Olympics. It’s OK to say. When she was asking her teammates what else she could do when she was bowing out of the group competition, I was like, yeah… get your ass out here and do your thing so we can take down the ROC… haha. And NBC… they pivoted nicely to focus on the other gymnasts on the US team, who by the way, won a gold medal!!!! That was cool; way to step up!

Winning a medal is a great thing. But for the “greatest of all time”… taking home one bronze medal on the biggest stage… I’m sure Simone is disappointed as well, regardless of what is said. It’s OK; shit happens. Let’s just not frame it as the best thing ever. Still have some more days to go; I will miss the Olympics when it’s over! Go USA!
