August 30, 2020: Bombs Away

posted in: Cubs | 0

When did Cincinnati turn into the new Colorado? Geez… balls were flying out of there on Sunday, leading to MLB history. The Cubs became the first team ever to have each of their outfielders hit 2 home runs in a game. Congrats to Schwarber, Heyward, and Happ!

Yeah, it was bombs away on Sunday. It seemed like anything hit in the air solidly to right field will fly out of that park; did you see Rizzo earlier in the series? Looked like he barely hit that ball and boom! Unfortunately, these bombs couldn’t have been spread out throughout the series. The Cubs should have won 3 out of 4, but instead, have to settle for the split.

The Cubs came back in the 2nd half of the doubleheader on Saturday to take a late lead, but brought in Kimbrel to save the game? WTF? He’s been better… pitching in non-save situations, but for some reason, guessing because Jeffress closed out the first game, maybe because Ross had been ejected earlier, Craig was brought in with a one run lead. Big mistake. We can’t throw away games this year. By bringing in Craig, I’m pretty sure 90% of Cubs fans knew this was a mistake; why did the Cubs coaching staff not realize this? It’s inexcusable really.

He proceeded to give up the lead and the game, allowing only 1 hit in the entire process; what a joke. Unfortunately I called that wild pitch that lost us the game. And by the way, Contreras, knowing who is on the mound, should have been better blocking those balls. The first one he tried to backhand instead of throwing his body in front of it; the second and last one he didn’t get down all the way to the ground as the ball trickled through to the backstop. He needed to be better to help Kimbrel try to navigate through this inning. Maybe Willson blocks that last pitch and maybe the Cubs still lose, but I would have liked to see it. I would have liked to see Kimbrel make the Reds earn it, instead of walking everybody under the sun. This guy should NOT be put in another save situation for the rest of the year, period.

OK, I got that off my chest; I was much happier after Sunday’s game. If only we could have had some of those HRs earlier in the series and/or save some for this week. Not complaining, just wishing we saw this, OK maybe not 6 HR, but a couple HRs a game. Heck, even if it’s no HRs, just some consistent offense. The starting pitching is not going to be able to carry us; we need offense. 4 runs per game too much to ask for?

OK, 3.5 games in first place is good. Day off on Monday, MLB worst Pirates up next. We should be able to get back on a good roll, but I thought that when we were playing the Tigers too…. who by the way, haven’t lost since they beat us. Splitting the series with the Reds was OK, winning one against the Pirates would be better. Go Cubs!
