August 31, 2020: Trade Deadline Review

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 0

If you felt like the MLB trade deadline came quickly, you’re right. With only 60 games, the deadline hit us at the halfway point for a lot of teams. There was plenty of action in the MLB, and at least on one side of town here in Chicago.

I think we’ve gotten to know Theo well enough to know he is going to do whatever he can to give the Cubs the best chance to win on the field; anybody disagree? Sure, has he made all the right moves and signings? Of course not; who has? But I will say this: he gets an A+ for effort. What did the Cubs need? The clearest need for the Cubs to me was left handed relief pitching; this was addressed by picking up 2 arms. Quintana is not going to stay in the bullpen; now with Chatwood apparently hurt, Jose will be back in the rotation. This is a good thing. That leaves only Kyle Ryan; it was smart to add 2 arms. What would be the next need? Well, somebody to help the inconsistent offense. In comes Jose Martinez and Cameron Maybin. Sure, we’re not talking about Trout or Harper, but they’re pieces; they should help. At the end of the day though, we’ll need our guys to be THE guys if we’re going to make serious noise this year.

On the other side of town…. crickets. I saw some stuff on Twitter. Sox fans apparently happy with this? Glad they didn’t mortgage the future? I guess the current winning streak has them drunk, because if I was a Sox fan, I would NOT be happy. I’m not saying I would mortgage the future by any means; no need to do that. I agree, that would be stupid. However, there are things that could have been done; pieces that could have been added. Did they even check? Could have got guys for more than just a rental period. Could have brought in some veteran presence; another arm never hurts. I’m really surprised they stood pat; I guess just making the playoffs this year will be sufficient. I’m sure most Sox fans would be happy with that, and it surely seems like the window is just opening, but still… you have to strike while the iron is hot. You don’t know what could happen after this year. Take advantage; add some pieces. Put yourself in the best possible position. But no… the Sox stood pat. Wow.

I don’t know if World Series titles are won or lost at the trade deadline. Well, I do remember acquiring Chapman in 2016; that worked out OK. Yes, I’m glad the Cubs did something. Yes, at the end of the day, the moves will not make or break us, but they help; they help give the Cubs the best shot to do it this year. The Sox on the other hand… they’ve been playing awesome; can’t argue that. But… there will be a losing streak; the playoffs look like they are in the future. Wouldn’t it have been nice to have another piece or two to help in those cases? Maybe the Cubs still won’t have enough; maybe the Sox already have enough. Only time will tell. I’m just happy we have a guy that is never satisfied and is always looking to improve. Let the last month of the season begin.
