August 9, 2021: Bears Season

posted in: Bears | 0

When was the soonest that the calendar ever flipped to Bears season? Well, here we sit… second week of August… and yeah, we’re there. I’m being generous actually. We could have started this on the massacre at the trade deadline. But yeah, since that day, I’ve been thinking a bit more about the Bears each day; I think they’re going to be good.

Well, of course I would say that. I think I say that most years; I’m wrong a lot. But every once in a while, the sun shines on this dog’s ass. Am I expecting too much if I’m thinking playoffs this year? Well, it didn’t take a Cubs dump to start this excitement. Of course, this excitement began on draft day when the Bears stepped up to the plate and took another big swing. The most important thing about that day was that we would NOT go into this season with Dalton and Foles at the QB position. No, we have another guy in the room; welcome Justin Fields.

Bears fans have been pouring the love on Fields early and often. Too much? I already explained why it could never be too much… not with the potential of finally having drafted a franchise QB existing. Again, jumping the gun here… just a bit… but like the line I heard when I watched Rogue One again, it’s all about hope; hope is everything. Just like the Cubs crushed our hopes, the Bears ignited them with this pick.

The next question is will he be starting; I think I may have touched on this before. Best available QB should be under center Week 1 in my opinion. If Fields is not that guy, maybe we drafted the wrong guy… If Dalton does start, we have to hope it’s because they’re just trying to ease Fields in, protect him, or whatever… and has nothing to do with his talent on the field. If he’s not already the best QB, I’d be surprised. A video from Bears camp leaked, showing Fields on the run, flinging the ball sidearm, into the end zone… like we need another reason to be hyped up. We do though… we really do.

I was watching the new Bears DC Sean Desai mic’d up at one of the practices; I like him. While Fangio’s replacement Pagano never really lived up to expectations, Desai brings a youthful excitement to the position; more importantly, he is a disciple of Fangio. Taking that base teaching, mixing that with your own leading edge defensive ideas… yeah, feed me that all year. Even missing Fuller, with a healthy defense, including the return of Eddie Goldman, there may be something to prove on the field there. That’s a good place to be.

So yeah, am I excited about Bears season? Duh. I’ve been slowly watching and reading more stuff. I’ve flipped on sports radio and will listen for a while if they’re talking Bears. I’m getting into the mood… I already placed my Super Bowl bet back in June when I was in Vegas. It was only $10, but the payout is 60-1, so yeah, $600 would be a nice start to my next Vegas trip. But more importantly, it would mean the first Super Bowl title since I was my son’s age, 9 years old… ridiculous. It’s about time… Good omen maybe: the last time I placed a bet on a Chicago team to win it all was in 2016 with the Cubs… feels like forever ago… but not longer than I’ve waited for another Super Bowl. If the Cubs dump equals a Bears Super Bowl… I guess I’d be OK. Bear Down!!!
