December 1, 2023: Circling A Game

Are there games on the calendar that you circle? I do. When I look at any of my teams’ schedules, there are games that stick out. First of all, are they any games that I can travel to? This is most prevalent for the Cubs. With the whole summer off, which city/stadium can we visit? Which one haven’t we been to before? This is the first thing I look for. Same for the other teams too, although the opportunity to travel to a game is a lot tougher with them, at least at this current time, and honestly, for the next number of years. With my son in school, the options are really limited. Will an away game line up with time off from school? Not likely. Trying to determine which road games I may attend is the first check. Second, what about the home games? We like going to the holiday game at the UC for the Bulls; that one is usually circled. I check around my wife’s birthday, our anniversary, and my son’s birthday, all within 3 weeks of each other. Are there any games we can attend to celebrate? Thirdly, what about the big rivalries? None of them stick out more than the Bears vs Packers; when are we playing the cheese? If I said it once, I’ve said it 100x; if there are 2 games per year that I really want to win, it’s those. If those are the ONLY two games we win all year, let it be them. This is how I work the personal side of circling a game.

What about the other side? Specifically, is there a game on the calendar that signifies a rematch, a chance for redemption, a huge revenge angle? There are games like that for my teams, no doubt. For example, I certainly have the last game of this NFL season circled… it’s Bears at Packers. This game gives us a chance to redeem ourselves for the face plant of a game we started the season off. Ending the season with a win over Green Bay, coupled with a couple other before then hopefully, will send us into the offseason with a good vibe. You better believe I’ll be ready for that one. Besides just my teams, this particular angle is a favorite one of mine to play when it comes to wagering on sports; of course I have to take it there. There was a game on Friday night that stuck out for that reason…

Oregon vs Washington for the Pac 12 championship is the game I speak of. Many times, the 2nd time two teams meet in the same season, the team who lost the first game, wins the second game. For this reason, of course, I liked Oregon. Of course, it’s not just about a straight up win, but how about the spread? This game got up to 10 points, which after watching the result of this one, may have been too much. This 10 point disrespectful line certainly had to get the Huskies attention. A team with a chip on their shoulder is very dangerous, especially one as talented as Washington. This team played really well against the team that some experts had ranked #1 in their power rankings. They won outright, clinching a spot in the college football championship playoff. I will remember this for January 1st…

What game do you have circled? I’ll tell you one other one that sticks out for me… This Sunday 49ers Eagles. I’ve been waiting to bet this game for a while, but now, am second guessing myself… which way will this game go? Which way will I go? What game is the next one I have circled? Maybe Blackhawks Red Wings rematch in February at the UC… that’d be a good one.
