December 13, 2019: 12 Days of Christmas

OK, back behind the times… time to catch up, and what better way to do so, then my own Chicago sports year in review: we’ll call it the 12 Days of Christmas. Of course I will weave together the ups and downs of Chicago sports in 2019 for all the teams throughout the year with a few personal stories to boot. Shall we begin?

To begin we must go back to the beginning; make sense? Yes, that means rewinding back to one of the most heartbreaking losses in Chicago sports history. Not THE most heartbreaking, but definitely top 10; if I ever get myself up for it, maybe I’ll make that list… I may have to drink during that one. January 6, 2019 is the date I’m referring to, and the game is Eagles vs Bears.

Who saw that season coming? I felt we’d be good, but not THAT good. We cruised through the regular season at 12-4 and faced a suspect Eagles team at home in the first round of the playoffs. Since we did it, killed the regular season, flew to the top of the heap under the radar, why not keep going? Why not do it all? Yes, we, can… yes, we, should, have….

We should have got rid of Parkey long before this fateful evening. Buying into the Nagy support for the every guy in that locker room, I shrugged it off after the 4 upright game too; hey, we won that game… it’s not like our season will come down to our kicker anyways, right? Wrong. If you looked up and down the roster that year, there was one glaring weakness, and that my frents, was Cody. It was this weak link that cost us the ultimate dream season. Yes, I know… who knows what would have happened in the proceeding playoff rounds, but by looking at the results, man… we could have done better than any other team in each of the following rounds, including the Bowl.

I hate to start this series of blogs like this, but I must. It wasn’t only Parkey. Although Mitch did step up when it mattered, he and the Bears offense started slowly throughout the game… forcing our defense to keep us in the game, which they had done all year long. And they did keep us in the game… until that last Eagles drive where we needed a big time stop on 4th down at the goal line. Our big time defense did not deliver either in the biggest moment. I guess you could say it was a team loss, but I will still say that every game must be won differently. And this game in question, through it all, we were put in position to win the game if a professional kicker could make a relatively easy kick. He blew it, and then had the balls to go on national TV flashing a smile trying to gain pity from the whole USA. What an asshat…

This lead to the 2019 kicking competition that bordered on ridiculousness, and after further review, although Eddy did win a game for us, he cost us two more… In examining our current roster, he may not be the weakest link, but he’s on the page.

OK, let’s turn the page. Be done with this game once and for all… or at least until I make that list of all-time heartbreaking losses. On the 1st day of Christmas, Santa brought to us, a shitty field goal kicker…
