December 14, 2019: The Offseason That Wasn’t

Coming off the kick that wasn’t, continuing to endure a tough Bulls and Blackhawks season, we looked to the MLB hot stove to keep us warm. After all, THIS was supposed to be a big offseason.

The Cubs had no money though… haha, that’s funny. I understand you have to be smart, and I appreciate that the Cubs had one of the highest payrolls in the MLB last year, but don’t tell me you don’t have any money. I was fine with the Cubs sitting out the Machado/Harper sweepstakes. After all, we had our own guys that we will need to pay coming up… Bryant, Baez, Rizzo, Contreras. I’d much rather ante up with the boys then overpay some other guy. Yeah, Manny and Bryce aren’t just some “other guys”… they are legitimate superstars. But answer this: would you take Machado over Baez? would you take Harper over Bryant? would you take either over Rizzo? Maybe I’m just biased towards the boys that help make 2016 happen… maybe that’s a reason why the Cubs haven’t made any drastic changes since then… well, besides the managerial change that would happen later in the year; we’ll get to that. So yeah, I was fine with the Cubs sitting the big spending spree out, but to know that Brach and Descalso were the 2 guys we signed??? OK there was Kyle Ryan, and he was good, but Brad and Daniel? Really? That’s all we got; sorry, unacceptable.

The Sox on the other hand were on the brink of going for it; they’re back on the brink this current offseason. How long will they remain on the brink? They were never really linked to Bryce (not sure why), but certainly had Sox fans thinking Machado was a coming. They traded for Alonso; they signed Jay. They might as well have bought a small hotel downtown for Manny’s entire family to stay. At the end of the day, they came up just short in the money department; a story line which would repeat itself come these recent months. They did pickup James McCann, who would become an all star, but then there was Santana who didn’t do anything. The Sox big “pickup” of course would be bringing up Eloy. He definitely made a splash, brought hope to the South Side, and gave the Sox something to mess with the Cubs about. In fact, I think the Sox even erected a statue of Eloy already… But yeah, the Sox came across looking cheap again earlier this year, with Reinsdorf apparently more than happy to take it with him when he goes vs trying to win one more. Are they really cheap, or did they make the right move? After all, you can’t force anybody to want to play with the Sox, although I did think money talked… But who really wants to play for the Sox anyways? Well, a lot of guys should want to right about now..

Yes, early 2019 was the offseason that wasn’t. No great shakes on either side of town. On the 2nd day of Christmas, Santa brought to us, two cold stoves…
