December 17, 2019: Golden Years

On the 5th day of Christmas… this one was easy. The only thing is that in the official 12 days of Christmas song, is it 5 “Gold” rings or 5 “Golden” rings? I went with golden…

2019 saw the end of an era in Cubs baseball. Joe Maddon was not brought back for a 6th season. For all the expectations that accompany our teams, there was always one team where you didn’t expect much. That team has always been the Chicago Cubs. It sucked, for a long time. The Cubs were known as losers, period. And you know what? There was really never much done to dispel that label, that was until Joe Maddon took over the helm. You can no longer call the Cubs the lovable losers. Sure, you can still call them losers, and many Sox side pride jagaloons still do, but the fact is, they’re wrong now; everybody is wrong now. The Cubs have won it in our lifetimes; there’s no going back.

I guess that’s why he wasn’t brought back. At any other time in our life, if the Cubs had a manager that took us to the playoffs 4 out of 5 years, and actually won it all 1 time, he would be a lifer. He would never, ever be rumored to be on his way out. Even if there were rumors, he wouldn’t actually be shown the door. My how times have changed…

Was it the right move? I actually came to grips with it. There was no better man for the Cubs managerial job before the 2015 season. Is there a better man for the job before the 2020 season? I think it comes down to that. I’m not convinced there is a better guy; I’m not convinced that Ross is that guy. Yet, the argument can be made that it is possible. The fact that the Cubs have not added another World Series title in the 3 years since 2016 WAS the deciding factor here. If the Cubs had won another, would he still be here?

At the end of the day, it comes down to the players. At the end of the day, Joe leaves the Cubs as the best manager in Cubs history; that wasn’t hard to top. OK, well, what about the guy who guided us to back to back title in 07-08? That’s 1907 & 1908! Yes, Frank Chance would have an argument, but even he did not lead us to 4 straight playoff berths. He didn’t have the longest championship drought in professional sports to deal with. He didn’t have to turn a franchise entrenched in losing into one of the winningest teams in baseball. He didn’t change the culture of an entire organization. Yes, Joe is on the Mount Rushmore of Chicago coaching, that’s for sure. I’ll always love him; I’ll miss him. I wish him the best, unless we meet him in the World Series.

We were all told it was time to move on, and that’s exactly what we’ll do. That will not change the best 5 year stretch of Cubs baseball in my lifetime. On the 5th day of Christmas, Santa brought to us, five golden years…
