December 18, 2019: The Joy of Six

OK, coming off the whole Golden Years talk, and “enjoying” the first postseason in a while in 2019 with no playoffs in the United Center, I hearken back to a greater time for the UC/Chicago Stadium boys. You don’t have to go too far in the memory banks for one of those teams…

As we come to not only the end of another year, but the end of a decade, there haven’t been many professional teams that have enjoyed as much success as our Blackhawks. The nice thing about that is you don’t even have to be that old to remember them. Three titles, count ’em, 2010, 2013, 2015 Stanley Cups this decade. Do we dare be greedy and want more? We have our fill for a good long time, no?

We all know that’s not how it works. Once you climb to the top of that mountain, you want to do it again, and again. That feeling of glory for a sports fan is unmatched. Forget about all the things working against teams trying to win it all just once; what about those teams trying to win it more than once? What about those teams that HAVE won it more than once in a short time period? Dynasty or not, the Blackhawks have turned in a phenomenal decade. They have given their fans much to cheer about; I’m very thankful. My appreciation comes from a deeper place, a place where I wasn’t able to even watch the Hawks growing up; can you imagine? Well, I’m just glad THAT’S over… then to top that off, my hometown hockey team turns into one of the best in all the land? I get just as frustrated watching them nowadays, but have to keep it in perspective; I understand that is not easy. I need to give myself that pep talk all the time. I’m just glad to have been alive to see these last 3…

I feel bad for those people that weren’t alive to see the Bulls Six. It’s one thing to have just witnessed a bunch of winning, like us Hawks fans, and to endure a rough season. It’s a whole ‘nother thing to witness these last few Bulls years and to have NEVER seen them win it all. I explain it to my son all the time. The Bulls were kings of the NBA. We beat everybody. We had the best player of all time. Nobody F’d with the Bulls man. The 90s were ours. That success, that greatness, that fact that we had MJ, curses us today. It’s that success that carries us onwards… supporting our team 110% even with the crappy management. Yet if you had to ask me, would you pay that price in the future for the six titles we won, I would say yes. This is another way I rationalize the losing times today with the Bulls. Problem is, anybody not in their mid 20s minimum, didn’t enjoy that great part of the deal. I feel for them, I really do. Yet, it did happen. Go to YouTube… look up some old games. Take a history lesson. It will make you feel better about today… a little bit at least. I do that too.

Yes, we’ve been lucky to have the joy of six on both sides of the UC locker room. To have personally witnessed 9 of the 12, I feel very fortunate. On the 6th day of Christmas, Santa brought to us, six Bulls & Blackhawks titles…
