December 20, 2019: The Questionable Superstar

And on the 8th day of Christmas… It’s getting a little more challenging thinking of things that make sense, like 8 what? How can I loop in 8 of something into this little medley here? Well, I can think of one number 8 that should do the trick…

Zach Lavine: the questionable superstar. It’s not easy trying to be a superstar basketball player in Chicago. It’s not easy trying to convince those of us who got to watch THE superstar play 82 games per year. For that matter, none of these so called superstars today really impress me much. Again, everything looks faded when compared to the gold standard. It’s not that I don’t want to have another superstar player on my team, it’s just that I don’t see it right now.

Derrick Rose was a superstar for a quick minute. Injuries derailed him from potentially being the next best thing to MJ here in Chicago. I thought Jimmy Butler could have been that guy too. Sure, did I like him better when he was just coming on the scene, busting his ass on both sides of the court, not acting all diva-ish, a true budding superstar, yeah. He was the last great player we had. For all those folks thinking we got the better of that deal, I got bad news for you. Of course, the story is not complete, right?

Well, I’m not really sure.

Enter Zach Lavine. He has the makings of one. He has tremendous offensive talent. He can take anybody off the dribble. He can make spectacular shots. He can get hot from long distance and fill it up. He’s not afraid of the moment. He can carry his team to victory. Why does he remain questionable to me? I don’t see much on defense. I don’t see him making his teammates better; actually I think some of the guys like Lauri are worse off. He’s not a great decision maker, whether it be early in the game or when the game is on the line. He seems to play with a chip on his shoulder, which can be good, but also I think hurts him at times. What is the definition of a superstar anyways? Even that seems to get skewed nowadays, always trying to crown somebody after a short period of success, or trying to make somebody more than what they are. Like I said, it’s not easy.

I want Zach to be that guy. Although he is the guy on this Bulls team, I wouldn’t necessarily call him a true number one, not yet at least. I’d love for him to get there; how long does the jury stay out? How much does a coach come into play with the evidence in question? Because I’m surely not sold in that area. When can we finally understand and appreciate what Zach brings to the table?

Maybe we need to forget about the whole number one true superstar conversation. Maybe we can win with Zach just the way he is. Maybe not. The proof is in the pudding as they say, and it’s not tasting that great right now. On the 8th day of Christmas, Santa brought to us, number 8 the questionable superstar…
