December 21, 2019: The Proud Franchise

On the 9th day of Christmas… Yeah, we’re getting there. Only a few more days of “Christmas” left. As I get closer to the end, the finish line keeps moving. Just can’t quite get there with all that’s going on. Let’s keep pushing.

As we come to the last part of the countdown, we’ll be focusing on the proud franchise that is the Chicago Bears. You do know that there is only one franchise with more NFL Championships than us right? I’m not going to talk about that other team, but 9 NFL championships is pretty damn impressive. That’s almost 10% of all the NFL Championships ever that have the name of the Bears franchise attached to it. Yeah, that makes me pretty proud.

Sure, we have only one Super Bowl victory, the current way to measure greatness. But all those years before that became the name of the game still happened. There were NFL champions before there were Super Bowl champions. They still count. As the years go by, they don’t mean any less. Sure, do I wish I was alive to have seen those other 8 titles, yeah. Do I wish I can see another Super Bowl title? Duh, yeah. I did see one in my life; I am thankful for that. Just as I feel bad for those folks who never saw MJ and the Bulls reign, I feel bad for those folks who didn’t see the 85 Bears kick ass and take names.

They’re always on the list of greatest teams ever. They most recently came in second on NFL network’s countdown. Of course, they’re wrong; the Bears would have crushed the 72 Dolphins. I think any of the other top five teams would have beat them at a minimum, but whatever. That is an argument that nobody can win. Everybody thinks their team is the greatest. Everybody else is wrong though. There’s a reason why that Bears team is still talked about so much still today. Is it partly because we haven’t won another since then? Sure. But the main reason is because they were so fricking great. We’ve had this discussion before.

Yes, that team alone makes me proud to be a Bears fan. I will never be shaken no matter how many years it takes to win another. We should feel pride by the grand total of winners in the history of our team. I surely do. Yeah, we’ll get to the current state in a minute, but that doesn’t matter in the big picture. I’ll be Bearing Down forever even if what we have is all we’ll get. On the 9th day of Christmas, Santa brought to us, 9 NFL Championships…
