December 22, 2019: The Biggest Bust

On the 10th day of Christmas… We’re going to stick with Da Bears, but bounce back to an individual that wears this day of Christmas. Here’s looking at you Mitch.

He’s been a roller coaster since the minute he got here. I still remember that day when I cursed in front of my son for the first time. That was the day the Bears drafted Trubisky; wait, traded up to draft him. I immediately jumped on the horn with my brother and started going off. What the heck just happened? Now I’m not the smartest guy and I don’t know all the draft prospects, but if anybody that the Bears drafted up to get, it should have been Deshaun Watson; that was my pick at QB in this draft. I didn’t know anything about Trubisky; for that matter, I didn’t know anything about Mahomes. Watson would have been my guy. Of course after my venting, I said I would support it; I hoped I was wrong with my anger.

Then the Bears signed Mike Glennon; that was a joke. Should have just started him from day one, but with Fox at the helm, did it really matter? He eventually played; he didn’t impress…I wasn’t devastated either. In his second year, under new coach and offensive genius Matt Nagy, he showed serious signs. The Bears kicked ass; Mitch did enough. He did more than enough at times. I saw enough to believe that the following year, this year, he would take the next step in his development. If so, with our defense, we would be serious Super Bowl contenders. That was about 4 months ago. What has happened since then would be like the big dip in that roller coaster ride. If this is who Mitch really is, then he could be the biggest bust in Bears draft history, and that’s saying something.

I think he’ll be back next year; I think I’m ok with that. He started off not so good. Those expectations weighed heavy on young Mitch. Then he got hurt…when he got back, Nagy didn’t do him any favors. He looked bad still; he looked OK for stretches too. OK is not good enough, not for this kid we drafted up for; not for our franchise QB. Does he deserve another chance? At least we don’t have to sign him to a big deal or anything. Sure, bring in some competition; that’s the smart thing to do. Now don’t do some crazy competition like the kicker one this past summer. I’m not sure we dump big money on any of the other options out there either. Unfortunately, I think we’re hooked to this train for better or worse for one more year. Could Mitch bounce back? Most think no…

This year has been hurtful. It’s been a bust of a season, but Mitch was not alone in this train wreck. However, as QB, you are judged on your team’s performance more than any other player, rightfully so. So, yeah, he deserves some serious heat for the crappy year, not only for falling short of his individual expectations thus far, but for the team’s underachievement. Does he get a chance to make it all good? Do we even think he can? On the 10th day of Christmas, Santa brought to us, another QB bust…
