December 25, 2023: Still the Same

December 25th rolled around, and things are still the same. Some say it’s just another day; I don’t agree, although I do believe in the theory that every day should be like Christmas. It’s a celebration, the reason for which many of us may forget. It’s a birthday party, even if the birthday may not have occurred exactly on this day. It’s a day of being thankful for everything we have, although we already had the forgotten holiday Thanksgiving. It’s a day of giving, and for the lucky ones, receiving… although as you get older, the giving part feels better. Yes, it’s always nice to get gifts, it’s better to give them, especially if you have kids. Watching your kids open presents on Christmas… it doesn’t get much better than that.

My kid is spoiled… at certain times in my life, I may have thought this was a bad thing. “I’m not going to spoil my kid”… yeah, OK. We only have the one, and guess what; I’m going to continue to spoil the hell out of him until the day I die. Maybe it’s the type of spoiling that needs to be looked at. Even though he gets pretty much everything he wants, we do try to make sure he is appreciative… and doesn’t have that entitlement feeling. I think THAT was the spoiling I wanted to avoid. I recently heard a term… the attitude of gratitude… I like it. THIS is what we need to instill in him along the way, as we spoil him… Yes, he’s still only 11 years old, and is definitely more on the receiving side of Christmas, but this will hopefully slowly evolve; when he gets older, he will be thankful for all his blessings, and spin into the giving side… although little does he know, he really has given us so much already.

Yes, the reason for the season may be JC, which I am 110% on, when it comes to Christmas, it’s about the kids. It starts with my son and branches out from there to all of his cousins that I’m lucky enough to see open gifts on Christmas. Of course it all started with my parents, who raised this kid, and the other kids I was raised with, my brother and sister, and of course, their families. How about my wife who is the center of my family today, and has a little something to do with that gift I was just talking about? She is a huge reason for my happiness and I love her so much. And with her came her family, which I enjoy spending time with as well. Yes, it’s about JC, the kids, and family… that sounds just right.

I hope everyone had as great a Christmas as I did, although I know that can never be true. I pray for it… I pray for all the people that have nobody, that may spend this holiday and most days alone, and I thank God for the fact that I don’t have to. Merry Christmas everyone!
