December 3, 2018: The Hate Files XXXVII

I shouldn’t be feeling the hate right now.  I’m not that mad about the Bears loss yesterday…  And then I get a nice surprise this morning.  My wife just asked me this weekend if I thought the Bulls will fire Hoiberg.  I told her probably not; they’ll let him coach the contract out.  Then the news broke today: the Bulls fired Fred Hoiberg!  She somehow knew; much props babe!  I should be happy about this, right?  Well, yes, but… what the hell about the last 3 plus years?!?!

I hated Fredberg the minute we hired him.  Horrible, horrible hiring by our crack GM two headed monster GarPax, who by the way, when Fred’s official replacement is named, will be the 6th coach under their watch.  When is enough enough there?  I hope to have an entry for them at some point, but you know the rules…  (OK, if you don’t know the rules, I cannot… will not write a Hate File about a current individual that is employed by one of my teams; I must wait until they leave… thus, the timing of this 37th entry into the Hate Files for Mr. Hoiberg)

Even though I say I hated him the minute he got here, doesn’t mean he couldn’t have won me over.  You know, winning does that.  You know, the Bulls have sucked since the minute he took over.  Of course it’s not all his fault, I get it.  But he did NOTHING for this team… absolutely NOTHING!  One of the reasons I hated him since jump, is because he was replacing Thibs; who I love, and still miss to this day.  GarPax wouldn’t know a good coach if it smacked them in the face.  So we allow them to hire his replacement… great idea!  Gar hires his buddy “the Mayor” away from Iowa State.  By the way, that was the worst kept secret for a year… grooming Thibs replacement while he was still here… that’s classy.  Hoiberg walked into a really good team in a weak conference.  The fact that we didn’t make the playoffs that year was a complete embarrassment; what was the difference from one year to the next?  Well, the coach was.

The team didn’t respond to him; who would after playing for a guy like Thibs?  Still, just as Fred could have won me over, he could have earned the respect of the locker room, but he really never did.  Benching Noah, the leader of that team & fan favorite, at the start of that first season was the definition of getting off on the wrong foot.  That set things into motion.  Rose was actually pretty healthy that year, playing 66 games.  Butler made the all star team… we started to see his transformation into the guy he is today that year though… the diva.  We certainly can’t place that blame on FredBerg, but he certainly helped propel that.

The next year was even worse.  The Bulls got younger and more athletic by grabbing Wade and Rondo; what a train wreck that year.  I actually did feel bad for Fred a little bit; he was probably just as pissed about those acquisitions as we were.  Fred got no respect from his players AND got no respect from the front office.  He was just stuck in the middle.  I seriously can’t believe he didn’t quit after that season.  The Bulls actually did make the playoffs that year, as the 8 seed, and gave Boston a run for its money before our “star” Rondo got hurt.

Then came tank mode 2017; which coach could have won with that roster?  Which coach could win with the roster we have today?  Well, I’m sure ANYBODY could have done better than 32-74 the last year plus.  I mean ANYBODY!  We didn’t have to pay a guy 5M to achieve this greatness.  To me, the last straw if you may, was the game against the Spurs.  When Lavine waived Fred off….  That to me signaled that guys were not on the same page, plus still a lack of respect.  And if these young guys don’t respect him… if these young guys can’t start to establish good habits while the rebuild continues… then we need action.  We finally got it today… too bad it was 3.5 years too late.

It should have never happened.  Not today, I mean the day we hired him.  He was over his head day 1, and although you can’t blame a guy for taking 25M over 5 years, you certainly can hate him for how he did in that unfinished timeframe.  Fred sucked then, and he sucks now.  This one was a slam dunk.  Good luck back at Ames Fredberg.  Let the hate be with you.
