December 3, 2019: Cubs Check

Let’s do a quick Cubs check. The hot stove hasn’t really been burning for our Cubbies. There was a notable non tender though…

The Addison Russell era is over in Chicago. It was fun for a while, but then turned south once his off the field activities became public. People would never look at him the same, and frankly, he would never be the same on the field. I’ve wrote about this before, how there was a time when I thought if the Cubs had to choose between Addison and Javy, they should choose Addison. Yeah, I’m not afraid to admit it. I’m glad they didn’t have to make a choice at that time. At this point, it really is a silly question.

I did think the Cubs should have traded him during the 2018 season, when he still had some value… way before the suspension. If they would have moved him at the trade deadline and packaged him up with a couple guys, we could have snagged Machado for the stretch run. Even if it wasn’t Machado, I think we could have scored somebody decent; he did still have some value early 2018 right? But we didn’t, and now we let him go for absolutely nothing. He went from the Cubs SS for the next decade to a free agent. I’m fine with him not being on the team any longer, I just wish we could have moved him at a time we could have got something for him. Oh well… I actually do think a change in scenery will do him well. Somebody is going to sign him, and I think he’ll do just fine.

Hamels is officially gone, signing a pretty big deal with the Braves. No surprise there. I am surprised how much he got. I really don’t think he’ll make it through the regular season without missing some substantial time with an injury, arm fatigue, dead arm, or whatever. They’ll be lucky to get 150 innings out of him in my opinion. But if the Braves are back in the postseason, and if Cole is healthy at that time, I think the move will pay off. With his experience and big game history, the Braves could certainly do worse in the postseason. Maybe we’ll meet up with Atlanta and face Cole? I thought for a while that may happen with Jake last year; maybe I was a year off.

Speaking about the Phillies, they signed Zack Wheeler. I was interested in him… I liked him, although he really hasn’t done anything to justify what he got paid. Paying for future performance is a smart idea, yet pretty sure you can’t guarantee future results; just look at Jason Heyward. Sure seemed like smart idea at the time, especially coming off his postseason performance against the Cubs; I’m sure feeding all the numbers in the formula made it seem like a good decision. Anyways, funny to me with this Wheeler thing that immediately after the Sox came out and said we offered him the bigger deal. I know they’re trying to prove it to their fanbase that they’re not cheap, like with Machado last year, but at some point you have to land the big fish right? Maybe Wheeler was not the big fish; to be continued.

OK, feels like baseball is still far away, and it is. Back to a current sport…
