December 31, 2019: Team of the Decade

posted in: Blackhawks | 0

Sure, as a Cubs fan, 2016 made my decade. There’s nothing that could top that. However, if we’re talking about the team of the decade here in Chicago on this final day of the 2010s, there’s only one choice…

The Chicago Blackhawks hoisted 3 Stanley Cups in the 2010s. How lucky are we? We’ve got other teams like the Sox for example, that didn’t play one single playoff game; that should be changing shortly. And while the Bears and the Bulls busted out on their attempts, and with the Cubs only winning that one (it was a BIG one), the Blackhawks cashed in 3 times. Now that’s the way to do it!!!

I saw some cool stuff on Twitter about the best Chicago sports moments of the decade, and it was full of Blackhawks highlights. The goal that we didn’t know went in started it all, followed by 17 seconds, and the first one in the UC. There was the Seabrook goal to complete the comeback against Detroit, the Toews game winner against the Blues, the comeback against Nashville in 2010, the Darling game(s), the battle with the Kings… it was a very, very memorable decade for our Hawks. And although they are not ending on a high note necessarily, they certainly tried their best to do so in Calgary on this New Year’s Eve.

Patrick Kane became the only NHL player with 800 points this decade, ending up with 802 total after his 4 point performance against the Flames. With this win, the Blackhawks end the decade on a 3 game winning streak. Only 4 points out of the playoffs, could they possibly start the 2020s the same way they started the 2010s? Is there one more Cup left in this group lead by 19 & 88? Talk to me in a few games where I’ll be talking about the Hawks looking at missing the playoffs again.

It’s been that kind of up & down season for the boys, and although the decade has ended with 2 straight postseason misses, it began with 8 straight makes. That my frents, is one hell of a decade. Of course there were those tough ends to the postseason sprinkled in there, none tougher than the OT loss to the Kings in 2014. We win that game, we win that Cup… we win in 2015 to cap off a 3 peat. I guess if there’s one regret for a fan of a team that won 3 Cups this decade, that would be it. I don’t think that was necessary to define this thing as a dynasty, but it certainly would have made it indisputable. In my mind, 3 Cups in 6 years qualifies… 4 Cups with a 3 peat??? OK, I’ll move on…

Yes, the struggle is real nowadays with the Blackhawks, especially considering what our spoiled asses got used to. I’m here for it though. I’m still glad to be able to watch the Blackhawks on TV, something I wasn’t so lucky to have most of my life growing up in Chicago. For that alone, I’m thankful. Now let’s keep this up and start 2020 with a BANG! Go Hawks!
