December 6, 2020: Early AM

5:17 am… It must be the weekend. I like to get up early; it wasn’t like that back in the day. But now, with a little help from a few of my son’s elbows, getting up early on the weekend is a routine. Still… 5:17?!? That’s really early AM

OK, let’s see what’s on the TV. It is NFL season and it is Sunday; they’re showing Browns vs Jaguars, and of course when I tuned in to verify that I hear the announcer say “Parkey is perfect” as Cody Parkey makes a field goal… F me. No way… we’ll have to get back to the NFL later. Let’s see what’s on the other sports stations. Yep, I was right… nothing Cubs on “their network”. I hate to beat a dead horse, but it would be pretty nice to watch some old Cubs stuff right now, but instead they’re selling vacuums. Not until 1pm is there some Cubs programming: the countdown of Cubs Cardinals best moments. I’m willing to bet there are a bunch of good moments for the Cardinals in there, which is exactly what I’m talking about with the people running that station. Cubs fans don’t want to see that shit. Whatever…

I found my fix on MLB network. I caught the end of the 1975 season in review video. Picked it up in Game 6 of the World Series; it was perfect timing. Of course this was the Carlton Fisk waving the HR fair game, the one referred to in Good Will Hunting, the one referred to as one of the best games ever. After seeing all the highlights, I would agree it was up there. Back and forth, big hit after big home run. With an ending like that, man… the only thing was that it didn’t end the Series. The Red Sox were celebrating except there was one game to go, and after taking a 3-0 lead, the Red Sox eventually gave it up as the Big Red Machine won their first title. Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez… wow. My son asked me if the Reds used to be good. I said yeah, really good. I love baseball history.

Up next was the 1977 season and some more history. The first year of free agency. Before then you had to stay with your team forever I guess; that’s kind of crazy. I mean, it’s cool in a way; I like guys staying with their teams, but I imagine the owners had all the leverage. I’m sure there were underpaid players. The biggest free agent prize that year turned out to be the guy that helped determine the champion that year. Yep, Reggie Jackson from the A’s to the Yankees. This was the season talked about in Summer of Sam. That 3 HR game would go down in history. This really was a great year. I mean, Dodgers vs Yankees… Lasorda, a Dodger lifer, managing vs Martin, a Yankee lifer. All the drama on that Yankees team. I liked seeing the highlights of the LCS’s. I really like the matchups before the last series of the year, in all sports. It showcases the two best teams in each respective league, that have familiarity with each other. The Dodgers came back against the Phillies to eventually win the series. I think it was Game 3, tied series in a best of 5, where the Phillies lead by 2 runs, had 2 outs and nobody on. Yep, they blew it. The Dodgers won that game and eventually the series. Meanwhile, the Royals and Yankees really hated each other huh? Seeing a few plays from that series… McRae taking out Randolph at 2nd base, Brett taking a swing and starting an all out fight at 3rd with Nettles. Hardcore. And oh yeah, Billy Martin benched Reggie Jackson in the deciding Game 5 of that series. Can you imagine today? Reggie did get a big pinch hit later in the game, which the Yankees won, which would lead us to the Series.

And when you think of the 1977 World Series, you think of one game. Game 6, where Reggie Smith hit his 3rd home run of the Series for the Dodgers, another Reggie hit his 3rd… of the game. First pitch in each AB… yeah, he saw 3 pitches and hit each of those out of the park. That’s nuts. OK, it’s 7am, and it’s time to get back to today and a big football Sunday.

The best part about getting up so early, regardless of what’s on the TV, is hanging out with my boy, who would look up from his video games occasionally and ask a random question about the baseball history on the TV. Sitting on the couch together with him, just chilling, is a great way to start any day, no matter how early. OK, football time…
