February 1, 2018: Good Bye Niko

So GarPax actually listened to me, and followed up and through with the trading of Nikola Mirotic for a first round pick.  Bravo.

Over the years, I’ve been all over the place with Niko.  Initially, I thought the Bulls should have traded him before he even played a game in the NBA, thinking that his value would never be higher… that when he would step foot on the court, he would be seen as another poor European player (I know there are a lot of good ones!), and we would be stuck with him.  Well, I guess it all worked out in the long run.

He was good for us… under Thibs.  But then again, Thibs got the best out of everybody.  That was just Thibs… that’s why we got rid of him… OK, I’m not going down this path again.  Anyways, he was pretty valuable there for a minute.  He actually started to look like a player that would contribute for the Bulls for a good long time.  I was wrong about wanting to trade him; I was happy he was with us.

Then when Thibs left, Niko’s performance went down hill.  It’s like he needed that hard nosed coach pushing him, to get the best out of him, vs whatever you want to call FredBerg.  Niko starting shooting everything… just chucking up three after three.  I started wishing we would have traded him again.  This guy sucks! is what I would say.  Yet, I was Niko in our Bulls house games with my son.  My beard is nowhere near his, but I rolled with it.  I am Markkanen now by the way…

Then you had last year, with the 3 alphas, that was a waste of a year.  It didn’t help anybody with their development.  It was a nightmare of a year that almost turned into a huge surprise in the playoffs against Boston.  But, Niko was the same… no good.  But I will give him credit… he went to work in the offseason.  Yet, I didn’t want any part of Niko in 2017-18 with the Bulls.  Yet, we brought him back.  Then the fight with Portis happened…

Can’t blame Niko for that; guy coming off what he probably thought was his best offseason… feeling like he was going to have a big year… and then that happens.  That sucks.  He never forgot it; I can’t blame him… to each his own on that one.  When Niko finally did come back, he was playing like a fricking mad man.  He was awesome.  Here he was… the famous Euro Star tearing up the NBA for a number of games in a row… totally screwing up the tank.  Can’t blame him for that either.  The guy was playing inspired ball.  He looked better than he had looked since the Thibs days.  Now was the perfect time to trade him…  and we actually did.

Getting a first rounder for Niko is very good in my opinion; don’t care about the other pieces.  It’s a lot better than the most recent Bulls transactions, which I’m not even going to get into here.  Let’s just take this one by itself; GarPax made a good trade.  And no, I’m not going to go back on the Butler trade yet, although it does look a lot more fair than I initially thought; good draft pick by the way made that deal.  Also, Lavine hasn’t been looking that hot lately…

Anyways, back to Niko… Good Bye Niko.  I will miss the famous Ricola, Nikola sound byte in the UC after hitting one of your treys.  And of course the ThreeKola by Stacey.  It was an up, down, and now out, ride.  Good luck in New Orleans.  Now only if GarPax can make another good draft pick…. Go Bulls!

Way to get the deal done Garpax! Adios niko! I cannot say that I will miss you. I think that the 1st rounder the Bulls will be getting in return should more than make up for your absence…1 less black hole on the team. No ill will niko, hope you succeed in New Orleans, but somehow I think you might be out of the nba and back to Europe soon. Is this the continuation of good things from garpax? Do they actually have a plan for the Bulls? I hope so.
    GO BULLS!!!
