February 1, 2020: One Shining Hope

Maybe it’s because the Bears crapped out this year. Maybe it’s because the Bulls season is in the toilet. Maybe it’s because it’s still too long until baseball begins. Maybe it’s because I’m just searching for something… but after Saturday’s win in Arizona, I am holding onto the Blackhawks as our one shining hope right now.

Maybe it’s because they’ve been playing their ass off. They had won 5 straight before losing to Florida on the way into the All Star break. Maybe it’s because after this win over the Coyotes, the Blackhawks have won 8 of their last 9 games on the road! Maybe it’s because they’re the best thing we got going right now, but I’d like to think this playoff feeling I’m having is real.

They’re a lot easier on the eyes to watch lately. Throughout the first half of the season, they turned in some real duds. Plus, every time they got us excited about their play, they would head the opposite direction and lose a few. It was really inconsistent play, and that does not equal the playoffs most of the time. Lately, they have been a lot more consistent. They can’t stop now of course. They’re are still on the outside looking in for the playoffs, bunched up with a number of teams fighting for those same spots. But if the Blackhawks can continue this consistent play, we may be back in the postseason; I believe, more than ever, that it is going to happen.

Maybe it was the way they won this one. Sure, they did blow an early 2-0 lead to get this game to OT, but man, did you see those shootout goals? Speaking about consistent, Toews has always been right about 50% in the shootout; his 5 hole shots are his trademark. But man, he broke out a wicked new move in this one; it surely was Patrick Kane like. And then, Patrick, not to be out done, turned in his own dazzler. Then Crow, who has always been good in shootout situations, shut the door. Another 2 points for the Hawks on the road. It’s more than just those pretty shoot out goals of course, but seeing Toews and Kane still have IT, gives me encouragement. Maybe these guys can lead us to another?

Of course it’s more than just them… our goal tending gives me confidence. We’ll have to sort out the future later, but for now, with Crow and Lehner playing well, we can ride the hot hand all the way down the stretch. It’s not like your typical starter-backup type relationship. We don’t have to lose anything playing either goalie. Both are showing that they can be counted on.

The playoffs are not a lock by any means. With the upcoming schedule, 6 out of the next 7 on the road (where we’ve won 8 out of 9 remember), we should have a really good idea in about 2 weeks if we’re contenders or pretenders. If I had to guess right now, I’m saying we’re IN; I’m looking forward to the boys proving me right. Go Hawks!
