February 1, 2021: We Can Work It Out

OK, what better time to check in on our baseball teams then in the middle of winter? There have been some going-ons… let’s catch up.

The Sox signed Liam Hendricks; great move. They also recently gave 1 year deal to Carlos Rodon, remember him? They had previously signed Lance Lynn & Adam Eaton. The question is: have they done enough? My answer is no. The offseason isn’t over yet, so the case is not closed here either way. And yes, the Sox had a stacked offense already, so not much to be done in that area; fair enough. However, with the pitching… the starting pitching specifically, being the biggest weakness on the ball club, the Sox have come up short thus far. Sure, signing Hendricks was a great move. You can never have enough arms in the bullpen; adding a huge one there, a certified closer, one of the best, was very nice. He’s not a starter though. Is signing Lance Lynn enough? I don’t know… I see other teams, aka the Padres, go out and sign TWO pitchers… both better than Lynn. Nothing against Lance, but don’t think I’m going out on a limb saying Snell and Darvish are both clearly better. Signing Rodon is a nice move in my opinion too; giving a guy that was drafted by them one more chance, starting rotation or not, was worth it for that price. Not sure you want to put all your chips in that basket though… same with the return of Kopech. Sure, if those both hit this year, you’re in really good position; you should probably buy a scratch off too. That’s the nice thing about Lynn; he can be counted on for a bunch of innings. Will it be enough though? Just because it’s more than Sox fans are used to, doesn’t mean it’s enough… Maybe there’s another signing coming…

The Cubs, ah yes, the “not rebuilding but sure looks like we’re rebuilding” Cubs. We actually acquired some guys lately. Yes, catcher Austin Romine, pitcher Kohl Stewart, and starter Trevor Williams lead that impressive list… Romine to replace Caritini I suppose; hopefully Willson isn’t going anywhere. Kohl Stewart is a former high draft pick we’re taking a flier on. Trevor Williams was decent… a couple years ago. But oh wait, what about Joc Pederson? Yes, that’s right… how could I forget. Hey, I’d take him over Adam Eaton all day long… Yes, the Cubs 2021 roster is taking shape, and I couldn’t be more excited… haha. I’d still like to see somebody, anybody from the Baez, Bryant, Rizzo, and Contreras group extended. I’d love to add some more arms; I wouldn’t be mad at a Jake reunion. It will be another guy we’re taking a flier on, that’s for sure. The Cubs will need these “fliers” to come through on the mound to have a successful 2021. What are we looking at right now? Hendricks, Mills, Alzolay, Davies, and Williams as our current starting rotation? I guess it could be worse… it certainly could be better. Grab another guy or two and see what happens. We can work it out, right?

Yes, speaking of baseball… they have their act together yet? 162, 154 game season? Start date? Fans or no fans? It’s still all coming together I guess, just like the rosters on both sides of town. Surely the Sox look to have the upper hand heading into the year as far as Chicago baseball is concerned. The window is now; will they take advantage in 2021? Meanwhile, the Cubs… the window has been shut, but hey, you can always make a hole in the drywall or something, right? Always ready for baseball; hope to see some in person this year…
