I could select a whole team full of linebackers; I could select a whole team of all-time linebackers just from the Bears. Yes, after starting this all-time defensive journey with Butkus and LT, we return back to the backers to finish the position. As already mentioned, I’m going with 4 linebackers; where I’m torn is which type of LBs I should choose to complete the job. Should I just say F it, and get guys who can kill the QB? Should I look at run stoppers? Should I find LBs who can drop in coverage? Speed, power… picks, sacks… there is no shortage of available options.
I’m having a hard time not being biased. I could have just went with Singletary, Wilson, and Marshall; at the very least I have to go with Samurai Mike right? He was at the heart and soul of those great Bear defenses. What about another great Bears LB? I own an Urlacher jersey. Not many LBs faster than Brain; not many who could cover so much ground as a MLB. What about the other great LB of that era? The other leader on that great Raven defense, Ray Lewis was an unbelievable LB, and we would certainly fill the need to “kill” the other QB… I’ll see myself out. What about Jack Lambert from the Steel Curtain? I didn’t see him play, but just looking at pictures of him gives me the shakes. Picking my final inside linebacker is no easy task…
How about on the outside? Easier, right? Speaking about playing against the pass, in the middle of another great Cover 2 defense in Tampa Bay was Derrick Brooks; he was another great one, a leader for that great Bucs D. I think of another Derrick who used to cause havoc against QBs; Derrick Thomas was always one of my favorites, with one of the quickest first steps ever for the Chiefs. He would have caused more havoc if it weren’t for that tragic accident. I see names like Jack Ham, another guy from the Curtain, and Ted Hendricks, a Raider legend, and wish I would have seen them play more. How about Junior Seau? I was a fan of his; LBs are my favorite. I’m going with Ray Lewis. Yes, I’m selecting him over Samurai Mike and Urlacher, and even Jack Lambert. This was another one I went back and forth with many times. After this selection, you definitely can’t call me biased! Maybe I need to select an all-time Bears defense to make me feel better… I know he’s had that off the field stuff, but I’m keeping the attention on the field, and on the field, Ray Lewis was an absolute beast.
OK, that’s it with the LBs. Let’s head back to the trenches, and finish off our defense.
