February 11, 2022: The D Line

posted in: Bears | 0

Still can’t believe I didn’t select another Bears LB… OK, moving on. Let’s finish our all-time NFL defense and select the remaining 2 members of the defensive line. It started with Reggie White; who will join him on the D line?

It’s kind of starting off a little weird, since I’m rolling with a 3-4 defense, which is the opposite of what I’ve seen pretty much my whole life. When I think of DTs, I think of guys like Ted Washington and Keith Traylor taking up all that space in the trenches. I remember how great Tommie Harris was, and how much we missed him when he didn’t play. Even today, when Hicks and Goldman are right, the Bears defense is on another level. How about Mongo from those 85 Bears? I need to include a member of the 85 Bears on this defense, right?

One of the best DTs I’ve seen play is Warren Sapp. I think he would fit in really nicely on this defense, but… for my selection at DT, I’m going to pick from an all-time great defense. I’m going to take a guy with a nickname that embodies what I’m looking for in my all-time defense. Mean Joe Greene, welcome. In the middle of the 4 time Super Bowl winning Steeler defense, Joe Greene is a lot more than just an all-time nickname. 4 time All Pro and 10 Pro Bowls should be enough to eliminate any doubt there. I didn’t see him play; I said I didn’t need to see all my guys play. I also said I wanted to choose from the best all-time defenses, so here you go.

Selecting the other DE position may be just as hard as that other ILB position. I think of Bruce Smith; how can you not? The guy was crazy good… most sacks all time. Speaking about scary, what about Deacon Jones? Wasn’t a huge fan of Michael Strahan, but you can’t dispute the talent. I think of Howie Long and Chris Doleman. I think of Dan Hampton and Richard Dent. OK, let’s walk through this.

I have my no brainers; Butkus, LT, Reggie White, and Ronnie Lott. My CBs are lock down with Deion and Rod Woodson. I also wanted to fill my team with guys from all-time defenses. I have Lewis and Reed from the Ravens; I have Brooks from the Bucs. I have Mean Joe Greene from the Steel Curtain. What am I missing here? Of course, what’s missing is a member of the 85 Bears defense. I don’t think we’d confuse anybody in that secondary for “all-timers”, but LA Mike, Frazier, Fencik, and DD were more than enough considering the front 7. My favorite all-time LB corps hands down is Singletary, Wilson, and Marshall; they were ridiculous. And that front 4… Mongo, the Fridge, Danimal, and of course, the Sackman… when you only have to mention guys’ nicknames and you know who you’re talking about, that says something. And when I’m thinking about getting to the QB, what better guy to select than The Sackman. Yes, Super Bowl MVP Richard Dent is the last member of my all time defense.

OK, that’s it…. well, not quite. We still need a kicker, punter, and a return specialist. That should be easy enough. Let’s complete our all-time NFL team next.
