February 11, 2024: Super Setup

The NFL really knows how to put on a show, huh? Maybe the average person was bored with the first half of the Super Bowl (I wasn’t), but by the end of the game, the NFL had us sitting on the edge of our seats, as the Super Bowl went to OT, eventually ending with a Patrick Mahomes game winning TD drive; you don’t say… The only thing that was “off-script” was Kelce not catching the game winning TD.

I don’t know… not like I’m a Niners fan or anything; if I was, I’d be totally devastated. I’ve been there… losing a Super Bowl… doesn’t get much worse than that. Still, the way this game played out… I don’t know, just weird. I know that this game is the biggest fixed game of the year, but I still hope for the best. It wasn’t that bad, right? The refs really didn’t control the game, or did they? For something you can call on almost every play, hard to believe the Chiefs weren’t called for any holding penalties. OK, which is it? Let them play or let the refs control it? They were certainly “letting them play”, whether or not it was played fairly, is another question. It sucks that I always have to look at it through this lens. To have the Golden Boy lead the game winning drive in OT to give the Chiefs their 3rd Super Bowl title in recent history making them a dynasty… just seems like this is what the NFL would have wanted. They got it.

I was trying hard not to hate the Chiefs, but I do. Any team that wins too much, I hate them. I’m definitely not in the group of folks who says, I just love watching Mahomes, or it’s cool to see another dynasty in the making. F that. I hate seeing a team win too much, unless it’s mine of course. I hate the folks throwing out the “Michael Jordan and the Bulls” comp… really hate that. Then I remember… the Super Bowl is for entertainment purposes; it’s entertaining for fans of the winning team, and for those folks rooting for them, that’s for sure.

Is this what the NFL has become? Just entertainment? Regardless of what happened in this Super Bowl, we’ll still all be waiting for Week 1 of the season… shit, I just got an email from the Bears this morning about the NFL draft in 2 months. We can’t get enough of this, even though we all have our suspicions. It was a good game though, right? The end result sucked for some, including me, but the game was pretty decent, yes? Well, why the Niners stopped running the ball, I don’t know. The mistake on the punt was brutal; just fall on the ball! The kicker, who never missed an extra point, kicking the biggest extra point of his life right into the line… don’t get that, but hey, I don’t get a lot of things…

I can go round and round on this topic, but at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is that the Chiefs won the game, period. Why and how they did it, will slowly fade away over the years, as we get consumed with the next season, and the next, and the next. The NFL is king for a reason; doesn’t matter if this game was a super setup or not, period. I swear this theory has nothing to do with the fact that I lost my bets on the Niners in this game… nothing to do with it…
