February 17, 2024: The Appetizers

The NBA reached the “halfway point” of their season, although it’s not really the midpoint. It’s more like the 2/3 point, but whatever. When I was a kid, this was a weekend we looked forward to; we wouldn’t miss it. Now??? Well, there were the appetizers leading up to the game…

Have you ever went to a restaurant and the appetizers were better than the main course? I like the first few events of the weekend, even the celebrity game. Maybe I watched it more because of my son, who knows all these YouTubers I never heard of, but it’s fun… it reminds me of a game I’d play with the guys, if we still played, outside of the dunking that was taking place. The chucking up of airballs, the wild drives to the lane and misses, the fancy passes that fly out of bounds… wait, is this the real all star game or the celebrity game? Haha… I watched with interest for about the first half, but faded after that. This game is what it is though; it’s supposed to be like that. The games that followed on Friday evening were a precursor to the real All Star game. The #1 picks got beat by the 2nd year players; effort was minimal. The rookies got beat by the G leaguers!!! I loved this. Talk about effort, and not taking it seriously… I’ll tell you what, the G leaguers were taking it seriously, even if they had all the bad habits of today’s NBA rosters. They beat Wemby and crew, easily. It was my favorite part of the night. Of course, they got smacked down by the 2nd year players in the finals. Still, a relatively decent Friday night IMO, although I was flipping back and forth to the NBA channel, which had on the 1985, 1988, and Vince Carter slam dunk contests… oh, how I miss those days…

Next up was All Star Saturday night with the Skills Competition, the 3 point contest, and the slam dunk show. The Skills Competition could be good, except it seemed like it was too easy, AND we still had guys screwing around. Anthony Edwards was shooting with his left hand…wtf?!? The Pacers team won that, ok… Next up was the 3 point contest, which is my favorite part of the weekend. That’s a whole lot of fun, but the best part was probably Steph vs the WNBA sharp shooter. She did great, Steph did better. I really liked that, especially since it was close. As the NBA hopefully slowly moves away from the actual game, which we’ll get to in a minute, there should be more and more of these types of challenges/showdowns. The slam dunk contest… well, we watched the first round, and turned it off. Certainly not Nique vs MJ…

Still, the preceding events on All Star weekend were halfway decent IMO. Again, expand upon THIS, and forget about the actual game. Speaking of that…
