Though I know I’ll never lose affection for people and things that went before… Monday night featured the return of an old friend to the United Center. Tom Thibodeau and his New York Knicks visited the UC for a classic Eastern Conference matchup. It used to be classic… after watching the game last night, maybe it will be classic again one day soon.

Thibs has the Knicks playing over their head; that is what he does. He coaches guys up; he squeezes the most out of them. He has those young guys buying in, which is reflected in the way the Knicks defensive ratings have skyrocketed. I still miss Thibs. He was an awesome coach, nobody can tell me any different. Yet, I feel better now… maybe it’s because the Hoiberg and Boylen eras are thankfully over now. Maybe it’s because we finally have another good coach with Billy Donovan. Finally, I can be a bit at peace with it… although I’ll still always love Thibs. I wish him and the Knicks well, just so long as their interests don’t conflict with our interests… well, on Monday night they did.

Potentially, the Bulls and Knicks could be fighting for playoff spots for the next few years. Maybe, we’ll even meet again in the playoffs, where historically, the Bulls have owned the Knicks; that would be fun. For now, we’ll have to settle for an early February weeknight matchup. It was another good game to watch.

The Bulls have been fun to watch this year. I think the biggest reason for this is because they’re actually playing basketball again. Do you see how they’re passing the ball around? Do you see the movement on offense? Do you see how many assists to made baskets they have? We’re still only 19 games into the Donovan era, but I think it’s safe to say, the Bulls are back.

Lauri! Finally… get your ass to the rim… get physical; love to see it. Back to back 30 point games; more of that! Thaddeus… serving that facilitator role at the top of the key a la Joakim Noah back in the day. Will he finish the season with us? His value right now is certainly very high. Zach… taking shots in the rhythm of the offense, taking open shots… most of the time… those are the ones he should feel confident to take and make. The times where he thinks he needs to take a fadeaway three contested by 3 guys early in the shot clock… OK I kind of combined all the bad shots he takes into one… anyways, those are going down. They should be… even though he does make those once in a while. Coby… still need to work on the turnovers, as does this entire Bulls team, but I’ll tell you what… There are stretches of every game where this Bulls team looks really good. Once they start extending those stretches, playing like this more consistently, putting a solid 4 quarters together, learning how to win the close games… they’re going to be dangerous. How soon will that happen? Do we have the guys on the roster right now to see that happen? Like I said, we’re only 19 games in the Billy Ball era…

The Bulls are fun to watch again; maybe not everybody knows that yet. They are playing ball; they have young talent, they have a good coach. They still have ways to go, but they are definitely on the path. Ah, those Thibs teams… I really miss those Bulls… ranking just under the Jordan Bulls… Now it’s time to start watching and enjoying the Billy Bulls… it’s time to watch them get better and grow right in front of our eyes. We’re still at the early stages here, but there is promise once again in the UC… and I’m here for it. Go Bulls!
