February 20, 2021: New Mindset

It was a good weekend for the Bulls. Yeah, I know they lost to the 76ers on Friday night; Embiid went nuts, Lavine was tight, but they didn’t give up. They had an off night, ran into a superstar who went off, and STILL were in the game. I know I’m all about the silver lining, but I really do see that here. It was the first national TV game for the Bulls in a minute, and they didn’t embarrass themselves. They represented themselves well, but still… winning is the end game here. Not there yet…

What followed this loss in Philly was a home date with the Kings; some may have called this a trap game. I would agree. I have seen too many of these games where the Bulls lay an egg; it’s bad enough it was the Kings. It brings back bad memories. It was about 13 years ago. I had scored some awesome tickets for my current wife and I; we were sitting right behind the Bulls bench. The Bulls jumped out to a big lead, a 30 point lead I believe… and they blew it. That was a sick feeling, especially being there in person. So as the Bulls jumped out to a lead on Saturday night against the Kings, that feeling went through me. And not only because of that night 13 years ago… the recent vintage of Bulls teams has had a knack for blowing leads, for not closing out games. Yeah, I was worried.

To their credit, the Kings didn’t give up; they kept battling back. That kid Fox is really good; can’t shoot free throws worth a damn, but he’s a good player. They pulled within 3 points with about six and a half to go; that’s as close as they got. Lavine was big down the stretch. He ended up with 38 points. Zach has been really good.

This new mindset that the Bulls are bringing to the table goes hand in hand with the changes we’ve seen in Zach. Lavine is the leader of this team. Whether or not you believe he is a true #1, he is the guy right now. On that note, I always thought he would be an awesome #2, not quite that #1 superstar… maybe I’m changing my mindset… maybe. What I do know, is that Boylen, yes I’ll beat on him some more, didn’t help Zach or the Bulls in general, period. What we’re seeing now, with a legit coach in Donovan, is this Bulls team, including Zach Lavine, starting to play up to their potential. And they’re not there yet; neither is Zach. With that being said, while the playoffs surely are in reach this year for the team, with the potential to grow some more, to get better, is that #1 superstar title in reach for Zach? What’s wrong with growing into that? I’m rooting for him, no doubt.

They’re still sitting right outside the 8 spot, and understanding the 8 spot isn’t the really the ultimate goal here, I’m feeling more positive about this Bulls team than I ever have. They are growing right in front of us. They continue to get better. They’re still inconsistent, and still have ways to go, but the Bulls are on the right path. All of the above can be said for Zach as well. Even if we’re still wavering on him being that true #1 superstar tier level guy, there is no question he is an all-star; there is no question he is OUR guy right now. Where Zach goes, we go. Will it be far enough? Making the playoffs this year is the first check box, then we go from there. Keep getting those wins. Go Bulls!
