Is 40 old? I’ve been there for a minute; my brother joined the club last year. Today, my “baby” sister turns 40; now I feel old. Her birthday is an anniversary of sorts. My first memory ever is preparing for her and my mother to come home from the hospital.
I guess at two and a half, I was too young to remember when my brother first appeared; although he still found his way into that first memory. I remember him there with me and my dad as we made a “welcome home” sign in pink paint in the basement of the house where my parents still live today. Yes, that extra year made the difference in remembering. Lots of good memories in that house; we’re still adding today. Lots of good moments with my sister too.
This first moment was etched in my memory; the next moment that comes to mind is when I hit her with a baseball bat. This was probably like 5 years later. It’s not that I don’t recall stuff between the two… Having a child of your own, seeing them grow up, brings back memories of my childhood. Thankfully there is no shortage of those from that house, with my parents, and brother, and sister. Funny that the one that next comes to mind chronologically is when she walked up from behind me as I practiced my baseball swing; bam! Doing any number of things together with her and my brother, walking to school together, family vacations together… all good. I guess one of the other things that comes to mind is bedtime. Those days feel like so long ago… maybe that’s because they are. Now we create our own memories with our own families, but these memories still intertwine. With the birthdays and holidays alone, we create new memories many times throughout the years; seeing our kids growing up together is a real treat. For me growing up every day together, it will never seem like enough; my son has mentioned at times how cool it would be if we all lived in the same building… at least we don’t live too too far from each other… that plus our family schedules getting busier by the year, I think we do pretty well. We are all very lucky to continue those good memories from our childhood, today, all these years later… 40 years to be exact in this case.
