February 24, 2020: Race to the Bottom

posted in: Blackhawks, Bulls | 0

We knew the Bulls would be there, but now, the Blackhawks have joined them. It’s the race to the bottom of the standings for both our NBA and NHL team here in Chicago. It really is the countdown to baseball season.

The Bulls finally won the other day against the Wizards; could we play them every game? That was the Bulls first win in 9 games. Meanwhile, not to be out done, the Blackhawks have lost 8 of their past 11. So yeah, combined, 4-20 since the end of January… it’s been a fun month.

I know I say I’m “die-hard”, and will be with my teams through the thick and the thin… and I will be… but doesn’t mean I have to talk about it. I don’t like talking about it. I don’t like thinking about it. Yes, I still tune in… yes, I still follow the scores… I still watch the standings… and none of it is pretty. The Bulls are 20-38 in the “no middle ground” Eastern Conference. There are the top 6 teams, then there is everybody else; everybody else, which makes up the other 9 teams in the East, are all below 500. I don’t know if that should make me feel better, but I don’t. The Blackhawks are the 4th worst team in the Western Conference. A month ago, they were right in the middle of the wild card chase; now they are 8 points out with 5 teams ahead of them for that final spot; game over. Season over… both of them.

Knowing that, there should have been some moves at the trade deadline, right? Well, the Bulls let it go by without doing a damn thing. The Blackhawks did do something, but most folks think the return we got was crappy. Which is worse? Standing pat is worse; you’re telling me the Bulls couldn’t move anybody for something that would have made sense? Pathetic. At least the Blackhawks did something… Let’s start with Gustafsson. Not sure why everybody hated that guy; seemingly everybody wanted him gone. I liked him. That’s not to say I thought the Blackhawks should resign him to a big deal… If they felt it was best to move him because of our depth at defense… I keep hearing that… that’s why we traded Jokiharu, right? Yet, why is it that our defense is the biggest weakness on our team? Let’s even go back to Leddy and Hammer if you may. We keep dumping defensemen in an area where we are the weakest… somebody explain that to me. Then there’s Lehner. On the flip side, everybody loved him. It made sense to me that one of our goalies would be the biggest piece of trade bait we should offer; I thought it would be Crow though. Is it that we couldn’t agree to a long term deal with Lehner? Sure seemed that he liked it here. Did we just not want to pay a goalie that much money? Will he resign with us in the offseason, and we just got some free stuff? I hope so, because I certainly thought we could have got more for him.

It’s frustrating times being a Chicago sports fan, let me tell you. Baseball can’t come soon enough. Playing out the string here…
