February 26, 2024: Combine Convo

posted in: Bears | 0

The NFL combine is here. Last year, this is when the Bears executed the trade for this year’s #1 pick and other picks, AND DJ Moore… Yes, it’s the one year anniversary of the haul. How could we pass up on CJ Stroud?!?! I’ve heard people say that… haha. Yet, Bryce Young was the #1 pick; how’d that work out? Well, that was then, this is now. What’s the combine convo look like this year?

Well, the Bears are back in the driver’s seat of the entire draft. What we do with that #1 overall pick with Caleb Williams sitting out there will impact everything. I’ve been saying we should trade it. It’s not the fact that I’m in love with Justin Fields; I certainly think we can be a good NFL QB. It’s more so not being as high on Caleb than others, as well as, think about the haul we could get! If you think last year was something, just wait. The Bears would be able to get more for this #1 pick than any other pick in NFL history, potentially; that’s kind of hard to pass on, right? We could trade down multiple times, and stock pile pick after pick after pick. But, Justin Fields will still be our QB and we will pass on Caleb Williams. That is what it comes down to.

Although I’ve been on that side of the fence, if the Bears decide to keep the pick, and in turn trade Justin Fields, could Caleb Williams be that guy we’ve been waiting our lifetimes for? Some think he would be. If those people are right, then yes, we should draft him; who really knows? This is the pickle. It’s a good spot to be in, but also, another important crossroads for the Bears franchise. Teams typically don’t get #1 overall pick after #1 overall pick. This opportunity may not come again anytime in the next decade. What will Poles do?

We’ve been talking about this since mid-season; it’s finally coming to a head, and you know what? I’m happy. I’m happy that we will soon know the direction of our team. All the Fields fans vs all the Caleb fans will finally be over. Although I am a fan of Fields, I would be a fan of Caleb too. At the end of the day, we should ALL be Bears fans. Whatever is best for the franchise is what I want. Unfortunately, I don’t know the right answer. I hope Poles does.

I’m open to whatever the path is that will lead us to a Super Bowl win. If I’m greedy, I’m wanting the path that will lead to multiple Super Bowl wins. If I’m really greedy, I want the path to a dynasty. How about that? We had that “dynasty” back in the 80s, but it ended up yielding only one Super Bowl; this is certainly NOT a dynasty. Since then… slim pickings. There have been single years here and there; there have been a couple multi-year runs at it. There has been nothing sustained since the days when passing the football was a new thing. The fact that the Bears have never found their franchise QB has a lot to do with that.

Has Fields had enough of a chance to prove to us that he IS that guy, because let’s be real… at this point, we cannot say he is that guy. Can he be that guy? Sure; I’d like to think so. But as of right this second… no. Is it time to give another guy, a guy some say will be HIM, a chance? Soon the questions will be over… I can’t wait. Bear Down!
