February 4, 2024: Zach Out

Well, I guess Zach’s foot injury was serious? He is now out for the season, after opting to have foot surgery. It’s kind of funny how the news was broke though… Per NBA insider Shams… “Bulls say Zach Lavine, in consultation with team and Klutch Sports Group, has elected to undergo season-ending surgery on his right foot” Is is just me?

I’m assuming Zach left out the part that the doctors think this is the best decision for him; that’s whose guidance he really needs to be taking here, not from some mickey mouse sports agency. Honestly, the Bulls shouldn’t be guiding him on this decision either. Are you healthy enough to play? Will you be hurting yourself more/making it worse by playing? Will it ever get back to normal without surgery? Is the surgery as close to a sure thing for full recovery? The way this was presented is making me think there are other people pulling his strings. Never before have I seen a sports agent mentioned so much when there is news about their clients. So between Klutch and the Bulls organization, they told Zach to get the surgery? Just weird…

This statement opens the door for many other opinions, such as, since there was no trade market for Zach and the Bulls aren’t going anywhere, then might as well shut it down. Or, maybe because there was a legitimate trade offer sending Zach somewhere he didn’t want to go, like let’s just say Detroit, shut it down. It’s all possible. Funny thing is, if it were option 2, the Bulls could STILL trade Zach; it’s not like the Pistons are going anywhere this year. Now that would be really funny. As far as option #1, besides it being amazing (good job Klutch) that there is no trade market for Zach, or maybe none that would satisfy Klutch’s golden child, is that the Bulls have been better without him; I’m sure that’s really helped his value… Still, the Bulls aren’t anywhere near being a top of the conference team. Regardless of how good or bad Zach is, the 20 points per game are missed. The Bulls need another warm body, not necessarily at a max contract, but somebody who could score, to move the needle on this team. For all that Coby has become this year, and man am I happy for him, the Bulls need more. When the 3 stars heading into the season have been anything but stars, you got problems.

This news was a bummer because now what? Assuming the Bulls won’t be able to move damaged goods Lavine, which should have been the #1 trade target for this organization shortly after we signed him to the max deal (maybe we should have never signed him?), what IS the move? DeRozan isn’t coming back; we can’t get anything for him for a half a season? Caruso… again, love the guy, but maybe we get a mini-haul for him? Outside of that, we’re stuck. The plan that AKME set in motion when they arrived has not worked; what is the new plan? Still waiting to find out, but if the Reinsdorfs have anything to say about it, doubt there even is a plan. Only the Bulls… only the one and only, Chicago Bulls!
