I’ve started this list of my all-time NFL defense with guys off the top of my head; I mean, with guys that I think are no brainers. Butkus, LT both qualify, as does this next guy. The Minister of Defense they called him; Reggie White is the next addition, the first guy on the defensive line.
I remember the USFL; I remember going to a Chicago Blitz game at Soldier Field back in the day. My dad actually forgot the tickets, so we had to go all the way back home to get them. It was really cold out; Soldier Field wasn’t that crowded, but I had fun. I don’t remember who we played, I don’t remember who won. I don’t remember Reggie White from the USFL, but this is where his career began coming out of Tennessee. We go back to that year again, 1985, to see Reggie White for the first time in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. He ended up finishing 2nd in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. I liked that Eagles defense of the 80s, maybe partially because Buddy Ryan ended up there after the Super Bowl. Maybe it was because of guys like Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons, and Seth Joyner. Of course, one guy stood head and shoulders above all, and that was Reggie.
At 6’5″ 300 pounds, I’m not sure I’ve seen many stronger Defensive Ends. In the spirit of my defense, with getting to the QB paramount, Mr. White fits right in. He currently sits #2 all time only 2 sacks behind Bruce Smith with 198. I watch Khalil Mack, and how he tosses offensive lineman around on his way to the QB, and think of Reggie White. He’d fling those guys out of the way, on his way into the backfield. You’re going to need 2 guys to block Reggie effectively. In fact, I love Reggie so much, I’m going to overlook the fact that he played for the team that I hate the most.

Choosing Reggie White was easy; it gets tougher filling the rest of my D-Line out. But… I have made one decision. Although growing up with the 46, and the 4-3 defense, I will be choosing the 3-4, 3 D-lineman and 4 linebackers, to fill my defense. That leaves 2 more LB spots and 2 more D-Line spots to fill; is that where we’ll go next? I don’t know… I’m thinking of another no-brainer first. For that, we’ll have to head to the secondary. We’re choosing the greatest all time safety to join our squad next.
